Joseph Don SlaughJanuary 8, 1930 ~ August 3, 2017Joseph Don Slaugh was born January 8, 1930 to Angus Joseph Slaugh and Mildred Annie Atwood in Vernal, Utah.Don enlisted on the U.S Army October 28, 1948 and served through October 29, 1951. On July 28, 1956 he married Chloe Givens, who was his lifelong partner, friend, and helper for 61 years.Don enjoyed ranching and being a cowboy. He lived on his ranch in Jensen for 44 years with his family. He loved to spend time on his mountain place. He loved hunting, fishing, and anything that would get him on the mountain. He especially enjoyed hunting and camping with the Smuin gang in the Marshall Draw. He loved to ride his faithful old horse Joker. Don became a welder by trade and always said he only welded so he could afford to be a rancher. He was a man of few words, but had a quick wit. He enjoyed trap shooting with his sons; traveling to various cities and states while his wife would stay home to take care of the ranch.Don passed away August 3, 2017 after fighting an illness for seven long years. His wife of 61 years, and family, will miss him dearly.Don is preceded in death by his parents and brother Melbern "Bud" Slaugh. Don is survived by his wife Chloe G Slaugh; sons Mark D (Alisa) Slaugh of Vernal Utah, and Matt J (Heather) Slaugh of Ault, Colorado; sisters: Shirley (Darrel) Smuin and Ellen (Dall) Cook all of Vernal, Utah; 7 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors, caregivers, and chaplain from Canyon Home Health and Hospice for all they did for Don and the family.Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at 11AM at the Davis 4th Ward LDS Chapel (3990 South 1500 East). A viewing will be held Monday evening from 6-8PM at the Ashley Valley Funeral Home (410 North 800 West) and Tuesday 9:45-10:45AM at the Chapel. Interment will be in the Vernal Memorial Park with Military Honors by American Legion Post 11 and the Utah National Guard. Services are under the direction of the Phillips Ashley Valley Funeral Home.
