Joan C. Fontaine, 87, of Marquette, died Wednesday evening, October 7, 2020 at UP Health System-Marquette.
She was born January 10, 1933, in Marquette, a daughter of Charles and Ruth (Gentz) McNerney, Sr. and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral, the American Legion Auxiliary, Womens' Cribbage League and a cribbage league at Snowberry Heights. She also enjoyed playing music and singing in her brother's band.
Joan is survived by her children, Alan Frieberg of Republic, Kerry (Jim) Bonovich of Ishpeming and Gwyn Fontaine of Gwinn; grandchildren, Joshua (Angela) Salmi of Marquette, Breanna Murray of Minnesota, Sarah Fontaine of Gwinn, Christopher (Jayda) Ward of Marquette, Jacob Fontaine of Marquette & Jordan Fontaine of Grand Rapids; great-grandchildren, Joanie Rooks, Madison, Journey and Mira Salmi, Andrew, Kalynn and Taylor Fontaine, Aniya and Anavi Wright and Malik Fontaine; and numerous nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Lauren Reichel; grandchild, Amy Rooks; great-grandchild, Tyson Murray; and siblings, Shirley Bowers, Kathleen McNerney, Geraldine Bengry, James, George, Donald and Charles McNerney, Jr.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 12, 2020 from 10 to 11 am in the Bishops Room at St. Peter Cathedral. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 11 am in the church with Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber officiating. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.
