She was the widow of Donald Crowe, a veteran of World War II who served in Europe as a member of the 104th "Wolfhound" division. After the war he attended and graduated from college then joined the faculty of and achieved the rank of Professor of Physics at the University of California Berkley.

She was preceded in death by her father Edward "Jack" Bolling and her mother Helen Baker Bolling.

Shirley was a graduate of Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg. In her HS yearbook it was said that she was "a modest lady; but quite alive". Subsequently, she was a 1959 graduate of West Virginia University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and Psychology and was a member of Kappa Delta. After graduation she became a grammar schoolteacher in Clarksburg. While she was a teacher in Clarksburg, she spent her summers taking graduate level courses working toward her Master's Degree at the University of California - Berkley. Upon receiving her M.A. she applied for a position at UCLA - Berkley and remained there as a faculty member until her retirement.

For most of her adult life, and until after her husband's death and her subsequent retirement, she lived just outside of San Francisco, in El Sobrante, California. After her retirement she moved to Lake Side Park, an assisted living facility located in Oakland, CA where she was a resident at the time of her death.
Shirley was cremated and will be inurned at a date and time to be announced with her mother, aunt, grandmother and uncle in the Baker Family Plot located in the Elk View Masonic Cemetery in Clarksburg.

No flowers for the graveside service funeral will be accepted. Instead, contributions in Shirley's name would be appreciated by her family to either the Lakeside Park Assisted Living Center, 468 Perkins Street, Oakland, CA 94610 or to the West Virginia University Erickson Alumni Center, 1 Alumni Drive, Morgantown, WV 26505.
