Joseph H. Munning
October 15, 1934 - January 28, 2011

WASHINTON - Dr. Joseph Harold Munning, D.P.M., 76, died Friday afternoon at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper following an extended illness. Joseph "Doc" Munning was born on October 15th, 1934 in LaPorte, Indiana, the son of Joseph and Kathryn (Scholl) Munning, who proceeded him in death. He attended high school at St. Mary's High School in Michigan City and following graduation in 1952 he attended Purdue University, UCLA and Illinois College of Chiropody. In 1958 he entered the U.S. Army where he proudly served until 1960, achieving the rank of Sergeant. On November 24th, 1960, he married the love of his life, Doris Birk. Following his military service he followed in the footsteps of his mentor, his uncle, Dr. William Scholl, and enrolled in the Doctor Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, gaining his degree as a doctor of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. He and Doris relocated to Washington where he established a Podiatric practice in Washington and Vincennes, serving both communities for 46 years until his retirement in 2009. Joe was actively involved in the Washington community and has left behind many good friends. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, and was a past member of the Elks, the Moose Lodge and the Eagles. He was also a member of the Indiana Podiatric Medical Association and the Airline Pilots and Owners Association. Joe led a full and active life filled with many interests and passions. He was a licensed private pilot, an active and enthusiastic golfer, a WW II buff, a voracious reader, a lover of cars as well as an accomplished cook. He especially enjoyed family gatherings that included his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Doris Munning of Washington; five children: Dr. Joseph Munning (wife "Scotty" Munning) of Jasper; Captain Gregory Munning (wife Sheryl) of Philadelphia, PA; Elizabeth Lobeck (husband Dave Lobeck) of Sellerburg, IN; Christine Gordy of Bloomington Indiana, and Dr. Amy Arthur AU.D (husband Michael Arthur) of Oviedo, FL. He was extremely proud of his eleven grandchildren: Joseph and Jonathon Munning; Katherine and Natalie Munning; Emily, Andrew and Madeline Lobeck; Mitchell Gordy; Jacob, Abigail and Sarah Arthur. He is also survived by three sisters, Kathryn "Sue" Welnetz and Joan Moore both of LaPorte, IN and Deborah Baker of Bradenton, Florida. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Wednesday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father Stephen Bauer as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4 to 8 PM with a wake service at 3:30 PM at Ed Lee Mortuary. The family requests that donations be made to The Washington Catholic Endowment P.O.
