Irma Sumner

Irma E. Sumner, age 89, of Washington passed away at 3:14 a.m. Monday at the Daviess Community Hospital. Born July 19, 1919 in Daviess County, she was the daughter of William C. and Anna K. (Mangin) Howard. She was a 1937 graduate of Washington Catholic High School and a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church. She was a member of the St. Mary quilting group, Friendly Club, RSVP, and past member of the Knights of St. John Lady's Auxiliary. Surviving is two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Karen Sumner of Topeka, KS and Tom and Patty Sumner of Washington; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Hal Barnes of St. Charles, MO, Vicky and Willy Ison of Columbus, and Elizabeth Jane and Phillip Garcia of Twenty Nine Palms, Calif; two sisters, Roseanna Doyle of Loogootee and Sister Rita Howard of Oldenburg; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Sumner, whom she married October 7, 1941 and he died November 8, 1979. One daughter, Cathy Sumner; one son, Edward Sumner; and four brothers, Victor, James, Joe, and Jack Howard are deceased. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father Gordon Mann as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ed Lee Mortuary with a wake service at 3:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. I was shocked to hear how fast she went down - I'll always remember the visits and phone calls Irma and I had through the years. My love to all the family. Shirley"

Aunt Irma was a joy and always shared a loving smile when we came to Indiana or when she visited in Virginia. You are in our thoughts and prayers always."
