Bruce M. Rogers
January 3, 1923 - September 1, 2008

Bruce M. Rogers, age 85, of Washington passed away on Monday at 12:10 AM at his residence. He was born on January 3, 1923 in Daviess County as the 8th of 10 children of Charles and Amy (Eaton) Rogers. He was a 1941 graduate of Washington High School and attended Indiana University before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. While in the military he was a B 17 Pilot for the 483rd GP of the 15TH Air Force during World War II. Bruce was in the food business in Washington for 50 years. One of his early jobs was driving a huckster wagon for his father. He sold groceries and sundries from a truck which was a store on wheels. He made a route through Daviess, Pike and Knox Counties. Later he was in business with his father in Rogers Market at 5th and Van Trees and by himself after his father's death. In 1957 he and his brother, Marvin built a new Red and White Market at the corner of East 14th and Walnut. After his brother's death in 1964, he and his wife Kate ran the store until their retirement in 1989. He is survived by his loving wife of over 64 years, Catherine 'Kate" (Backes) Rogers whom he married on June 2, 1944; two daughters and sons in-law, Lucinda Ann 'Cindy' and Mike Kramer, and Mary Lynn and John Wilson all of Washington; one son and daughter in-law, David Joseph and Molly Rogers of Washington; thirteen grandchildren, Rebecca (Kramer) Dolick and husband Drew, Amanda Kramer, Kurt Kramer and wife Jenny, Amy Wilson Plant and husband Jesse, Emily Wilson Wichman and husband Brian, Rachael Wilson Werner and husband Greg, Ellen Wilson Hughes and husband Justin, Ben Wilson, Allyson Wilson, Christina Rogers, Jennifer Rogers Taylor and husband Bill, Angela Rogers, and Aaron Rogers; thirteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia McKown of Washington and Barbara Jauch of Bloomington; one brother, Fred Rogers of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers Voila Rogers, Bill Rogers, Franklin Rogers, Marvin Rogers and Forest Rogers; and one sister, Lorna Rogers Boling. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 9:00 AM at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father Gordon Mann as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with a wake service at 4:00 PM and on Thursday from 7:30 till 8:30 AM at the church.
