John C. Smith, age 81, of Washington, passed away October 2, 2018 at 4:20 a.m. at Amber Manor Nursing Center in Petersburg.
He was born on September 8, 1937 in Washington to John and Clematine (Vieck) Smith. He graduated from Washington Catholic High School in 1955 and had retired from CSX Railroad. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and volunteered for the St Vincent DePaul Society for several years.
He is survived by two sons, Richard Smith of Greenwood and Bill (Jenny) Smith of Dubois; two daughters, Lisa (Don) Alley of Petersburg and Laura (Mike) Boyd of Winslow; two sisters, Ruth Ann Mangin of Flat Rock, Michigan and Betty McDowell of Terre Haute; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Virginia Mangin; brother, Barney Smith and Robert Vieck.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father Paul Ferguson as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Vincennes. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 PM on Thursday at Ed Lee Mortuary North Chapel, 620 East Viola Ave, Washington, Indiana 47501.
