Eleanor Sturgeon
July 30, 1924 - January 2, 2011

Eleanor Sturgeon, age 86, of Washington, on Sunday at 5:25 p.m. Sunday returned to her heavenly home at St. Mary Medical Center in Evansville. She was born July 30, 1924 in Daviess County to Joseph and Alma (Alberti) Mattingly. She was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and a 1942 graduate of Washington Catholic High School. She had worked at Reliance Manufacturing before her marriage and at Prairie Village as a CNA from 1976 to 1986. Eleanor used her steadfast faith and guidance of her heavenly Father to see her husband, Bob, through some difficult years and the raising of her children who became, along with God the center of her world. She was the solid foundation that held everyone together through difficult times. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Jacquelyn J. O'Bryan and Fred Ubbenga, and Sandi Steimel all of Washington; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert E. "Bobby" and Marsha Sturgeon, and Mark A. and Jane Sturgeon all of Washington, and Douglas "Mike" and Robin Sturgeon of Crown Point; nine grandchildren, Sherri Doyle of Harrison, Tennessee, Rodney Sturgeon of Merrillville, Michael O'Bryan of Indianapolis, Erik Parsons of Evansville, Annie and Lizzie Sturgeon of Crown Point, Jessica Hess of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Mark Anthony Sturgeon,, and Alyssa Gilley both of Washington; four step grandchildren, Lonnie Byrd of Jasper, Autumn Mendoza of Bloomington, and Sean Byrd and Dustin Mathis both of Washington; one sister, Shirley Bunte of Bruceville; two brothers, James Richard "Rip" Mattingly and Donald Mattingly both of Washington; nine great grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Robert E. Sturgeon, whom she married March 6, 1943, passed away March 14, 2008. An infant son, Jeffery Lynn Sturgeon; one infant granddaughter, Mary Ann Sturgeon; one sister, Kathleen "Pat" Reckers; and two brothers, Harold Mattingly and Charles Eugene Mattingly are also deceased. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father James Koressel as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ed Lee Mortuary with a wake service at 4 p.m. Visitation will also be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
