E. Brayton Smoot

E. Brayton Smoot, 77, passed away in Las Cruces, NM on July 23, 2009. Brayton was born in Washington, Indiana. He earned a Master's Degree from Saint Louis University in Saint Louis, Missouri, and a Juris Doctorate in Law from Indiana University. He established his career as a lawyer in 1970, and in 1972 he established his own practice. He served as a Public Defender in Daviess County, Indiana from 1972 through 1974. He was elected to the office of Prosecutor in 1974 and served as the Daviess County Prosecutor from 1974 through 1982. He continued his private practice from 1982 until his retirement in 1999. He had a deep interest in reading in all subject areas and enjoyed classical music and photography. He is survived by his wife, June Casey Smoot of Las Cruces, NM, children, Julie M. Smoot, of Orlando, FL, Kathleen A. Smoot, of Campbell, CA, and Dr. James Smoot and daughter-in-law, Dr. Laura Smoot of Davis, CA and Grandchildren, Steven E. Jones, Kimberley A. Smoot of Las Cruces, NM and Gianna Smoot, of Davis, CA and daughter-in-law, Sally L. Smoot, of Las Cruces. He is preceded in death by his parents, E. Brayton and Christine Smoot and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Evelyn Casey, and his son Brayton E. Smoot. Visitation will take place at Ed Lee Mortuary, 101 N. Meridian Street, 6-8 p.m. on Friday, July 31st. The funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 315 N. E. 3rd Street in Washington, with burial at St. John's Cemetary immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL, 60601-7633

"so very sorry for your loss. brayton was the prosecutor at the time when my brother, patrick w bowling was killed by john d blackburn at a new years eve party. (st. mary homestead hall;1976)my brother was an innocent bystander and blackburn hit pat causing him to hit the concrete floor. brayton did a great job at the trial and i will never forget his closing comments to send this man to jail. later in blackburns life, he was killed in a truck accident in okeene,ok. (8-29-91)"
