"Nanny Ruth"

Ruth Walker Stripland Carter, age 94, better known as "Nanny Ruth" was born April 28, 1926 passed away peacefully on August 19, 2020. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Fred Stripland, 2nd husband Clinton Carter, her parents Lemon and Lucy Walker, all six of her siblings; Doris Anglin, Rex Walker, James Walker, Kathryn Stokes, Omia Grimes, Billy Walker and great granddaughter Alexandra Hill. Ruth moved to Cumming as a child with her family. Ruth's father, Lemon Walker brought the first sawmill to Forsyth County and made a home for his family. At age 11, Ruth was saved at Pleasant View Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, helped provide food for every church gathering and was famous for her huge, beautiful coconut cakes. Fred Stripland fell in love with and married her when she was fifteen years old. They had three children; Sandra, David and Allen and created a happy home. Ruth was a wonderful mother who gave her children the two most important ingredients for a successful life. She introduced them to her Savior, The Lord Jesus Christ and she gave them a strong work ethic. Nanny Ruth was absolutely amazing because when she set her mind to do something, she did it!! Her motto was, "I'll NOT be outed!" After losing Fred to a heart attack, Ruth met and married Clinton Carter. She often spoke of how blessed she was to have had two wonderful remarkable husbands in her lifetime. Nanny Ruth was famous for her bountiful gardens, delicious meals and fun parties! Often she would have over 100 people at Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and the famous "Pickin 'N Grinnings" at their cabin in Hiawassee. Nanny was the center of the family drawing all those around her into her circle of love. She lived life to the fullest, never wasting a moment! Everyone loved Nanny Ruth and will miss her dearly.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Robert) Ingram; son, David (Paulette) Stripland and Allen Stripland, all of Cumming, Georgia; stepson, Steven (Jackie) Carter of Gainesville; brother-in-law, Elbert Carter of Lawrenceville; sisters-in-law, Jean Goodwin, Mary Mathis, and Jerri Bolton; brothers-in-law, Johnny Stripland and Annelle and Bill Stokes; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, loving friend and caregiver, Valerie Emmett.
