"I must say that the news of Doug's passing was like the floor being pulled out from under me. I never saw it coming. I worked with Doug at New Castle Walmart & he helped train me for management. Doug was my mentor for over a year and someone I stayed in close contact with after I was promoted until I left the company. We were the same age, and to see someone so young & full of life and energy be taken has left me in awe.  Unfortunatley, I haven't spoken to Doug since before his accident and wasn't even made aware of his death until 2 week after it occured.  Doug was one of my very best friends that I had working at Walmart for over 7 years.  Doug you will be missed. I know you are being missed terribly by all those that ever encountered you in life. I loved you like a brother.  And I'll never forget you. May God lay His hand of comfort on all who knew Doug."

"I am not sure where to start. Doug was a great childhood friend. We had alot of great times in the neighborhood. Its amazing how time flies, it seemed only yesterday we were playing football, basketball, riding your go cart, playing pool at the Huttons, and I could go on and on.  I remember playing on your computer when we experienced our first earthquake and the lamp almost fell on your head.  Sandy and Larry were so good to me and all the neighborhood kids. Dougs house was like the central meeting area for all us rug rats, before we decided what problems we were going to cause. I will truely miss you and will never forget you my friend.  I am happy you are hanging with your Dad again. I can only imagine how much fun you 2 are having together."

"Doug was an incredible friend. He was always there for everyone, he never knew a stranger. He was always trying to feed me! Every time I saw him he would have something new that he wanted me to try. And it usually was in 5 pound bags! He loved to make others feel comfortable and at ease. I met Doug when he came to the hotel I worked at and "crashed" the pool. My job was to throw him out, his job was to convince me to stay....he won and we were friends ever since. I was honored to be in his wedding and I was humbled to participate in his recovery. He was always the same person no matter what he came up against. I think I shed more tears for him than he ever did for himself. I held onto the dream that he would walk again, but he would tell me that it didn't matter. He had another purpose here. Since Bob called me at 6 am on Friday morning, I have been trying to make sense of that purpose and I have come to accept his purpose was to make all of us feel ok about things. He made us laugh and he made us stop crying. He never wanted anyone to feel sorry for him, he always tried to make it better for others. I will miss his advice. I will miss his can do attitude. I will miss the inside jokes. Sandy please know he lives in all of us that love him. He will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my friend. I love you."

"Doug, to say you will be missed is an understatement.  You set such an example of how to live life and have fun while doing it.  Since Bob called me early on Friday morning I have had a lot of time to think about all the good times that we had growing up together: little league, go karts, tennis, Highland, Ball State, roommates, Nashville, Garth concerts, playing pool at Huttons, your cowboy vest, stereo speakers, and playing cards.  You were a true soul man (a few people will get that).  After your accident I never once heard you complain, you took everything in stride and showed all of us how to overcome adversity.  I will always remember our last talk a few weeks ago and watching your rugby match in Indy.  Even though you wont be there in person you can rest assured that as Katelyn grows up I will tell her how special of a person that you were and your passion for living life.  I can only hope that she grows up and treats people as well as you did.  Doug, you were the best and I am a better person for knowing you.  I know that you are hanging out with your Dad again and that makes me smile.   Tony, Brandi, and Katelyn Crum"

"Doug started out as my boss but became a friend and someone who would always give me advice and support when I needed it. Doug had such a great attitude about life after his accident most would have gave up on life but he just made it a new beginning. Doug no matter when I seen him would always ask about my wife and son and would want to see my son. My wife and I wanted our son to grow up like Doug for the attutide he had and the way he loved life. This world lost a great person that went way to early and will be sadly missed. To his parents you were very special people for how you took care of Doug and always had a smile on you face and kind word to say."
