In loving memory of

Mabel P. Dooley
September 13, 1915 - February 7, 2011

Marion: Mabel (Jones) Dooley of Marion, Indiana passed into an Eternal Spiritual Life at 1:20 am, Monday morning. She was born in Valier, Illinois, the daughter of Roscoe and Yetta Mae (Koehler) Jones. She was raised on a farm near Ina, Illinois. She had seven brothers and one sister. All have passed except for Calvin Jones of Mount Vernon, Illinois. Mabel married Richard Dooley of Sweetser, Indiana on December 28, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York. They celebrated more than 66 years of marriage and he preceded her in death on July 26, 2004. Mabel was traveling with a friend when she met Richard (a Navy man) in Key West, Florida. She was not ready for marriage and returned to her home in southern Illinois. He took leave from the Navy and went to Ina to meet her parents and persuade her to go with him. After being married and discharged from the Navy, they came back to Indiana. For a brief period, they lived on a ranch in Lake County, where Richard was employed and she cooked for the hired hands. In 1941, they moved to a farm in Grant County, five miles east of Marion on Soldiers Home Road. Mabel referred to this place as the "poor farm", referring mostly to the clay soil. She would have the boys plow the garden with an abundance of cow manure to enrich the soil. Mabel would have plenty of tomatoes and green beans for canning. In mid-summer she would have the family out in the woods picking black berries. Mabel is a member of Brookhaven Wesleyan Church and had been a member of Lugar Creek Christian Church where she served on the board and taught Sunday school. Mabel said her greatest accomplishment was to raise her five children and get them through high school. She is survived by her admired sons Richard, Charles, John, Frank, a daughter, Phoebe, 12 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. "I knew Mabel and Dick through caring for Dick in the Geri Clinic and GEM inpatient care he received at the VANIHCS. We became friends. They were such a delightful couple. Mabel always so supportive of Dick and he of her. I am sure they will be greatly missed, but I am also sure they have passed their values onto their children and grandchildren. It was an honor to have known both and served both."
