Joan Oliver Jones passed away Sunday evening, May 16, 2010, surrounded by family. Joan was born in Van Buren, Indiana on February 25, 1930, the daughter of Mabel Trout Oliver and Frances Bernon Oliver. Joan and Omar celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 14, 2010. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Omar Jones, daughters Pam (Terry) Roush, and Ann (Mike) Parker, sons Mike (Susan) Jones, and Mark Jones. Her grandchildren: Channing (Monica) Roush, Michael Parker, Tara Roush, Melissa (Rob) Burke, Braden (Danielle) Jones, and Preston Jones. Her great grandchildren: Ledare, Mills and Lawson Roush and Wyatt and Zayda Burke. Her brothers: Keith (Lois) Oliver and Bruce Oliver. She was preceded in death by her parents and her youngest brother, Larry Oliver. Joan cherished her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, always looking forward to her time with them. She had many interests and pass times, including spending summers at the lake, camping with the kids when they were younger, playing cards, fishing, needlework, gardening and car racing including NASCAR. She also loved to do crossword puzzles and word puzzles. She was a member of the Upland Tri A Dice Club where she had many dear friends. Joan was a member of the Upland United Methodist church. Joan graduated from Jefferson Twp. High School. She enjoyed many different occupations over the years, starting when she was a young girl with a newspaper route in Upland that she delivered by bicycle. After she and Omar married and moved to Marion, she worked as a switchboard operator with Bell Atlantic Telephone. Other places of work included the RCA, Freese's Printing, and Moore's Grocery. She especially enjoyed her time working at the Greenhouse Child Care Center in Upland. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 2 p.m. in Jones-Smith Funeral Home, 259 N. Main Street, Upland with Pastor Rob Neal and Pastor Lemar Imes officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday evening, May 18 from 4-7 pm at the funeral home and one half hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Jefferson Cemetery, Upland. Memorials may be made to New Hope Hospice or the American Heart Association.
