Mr. John F. Jake Doherty, of Taunton, died Monday, May 23 in Longmeadow of Taunton following a period of failing health. He was the husband of the late Jane E. (Donelan) Doherty. He was born 87 years ago in Fall River, the son of the late John F. and Elsie A. (Sheehan) Doherty, Sr. He was educated in Taunton, having graduated from Taunton High School, and also graduated from Northeastern University in Boston. He was a lifelong city resident. Prior to his retirement,he had owned and operated the former Dohertys Market on Washington Street in Taunton for over 50 years, where he was well known for his quality meats, especially corned beef. Mr. Doherty was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Taunton Lodge of Elks, and was also a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and The Inn Fitness Club in Taunton. He enjoyed playing cards, bicycle riding, visiting Bakers Beach in Westport and, following his retirement, working out and swimming on a daily basis at The Inn Fitness Club, where he made many lifelong friends and was known as "The Man of Iron. Jakes family was the most important part of his life. He was a communicant of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Taunton. He leaves: 4 sons: Stephen F. Doherty of Taunton, John T. Doherty of Taunton, Paul E. Doherty of Taunton and William P. Doherty of Dighton; 5 daughters: Mary K. Odell of Dover, N.H., Margaret L. Leal of Raynham, Sarah J. Doherty of Roberts Creek, British Columbia, Susan J. Gabriel of W.Newbury, Ma., and Elizabeth A. Peyton of Richmond, Va.; 1 brother: Matthew T. Doherty of Juno, Fla.; 4 sisters: Eleanor Bush of Islamorada, Fla., Mary Fisher of Smyrna, Ga., Ann Lamore of Virginia Beach, Va., and Elsie Whittaker of Falmouth; 17 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Doherty was also the brother of the late James Doherty of Taunton and the late Joan LaFrance of No. Dighton. Funeral services will be held from The Riendeau-Mulvey Funeral Home, 467 Bay Street on Friday, May 27 at 9:30 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in St. Andrew the Apostle Church at 11:00 A.M. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M.
