Stanley Jerome Carter, Jr., was born in Washington D.C. on January 6, 1944, to the late Stanley J. Carter, Sr., and the late Ruth E. Johnson Carter. He attended Theodore Roosevelt High School, where he lettered in varsity basketball and graduated with honors. "Stan," was accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy in June 1965. He received a Bachelor of Science degree and then entered flight school at NAS Pensacola. During this time he met and married Faye Amanda Boyd in September 1968. They had two children, Eric Jerome and Gail Lynn. During his distinguished Naval career, Stan served in units of both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets, and a tour during the Vietnam War. He rose to the rank of Commander as he served shipboard tours; as a Combat Information Officer and Navigator on the USS Albany, and Executive Officer on the USS Charles P. Cecil. During his tour he earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. Stan retired from the United States Navy in September 1988, and was authorized to wear the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Service Device, and the National Defense Service Medal. After his retirement, Stan worked at Florida A& M University as the Assistant to the Dean of the Business School. During the four years he lived in Davie County, he owned All American Ford in Mocksville. He later worked as the Director of Human Resources at Network Engineering in Maryland. He ended his professional career in 2009, when he retired from the National Security Agency, where he held the title of Chief of Recruitment. Stan was also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Stan will be remembered for his dedication to his country and family, his smile, and friendliness. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Lavern Jackson. On November 8, 2014, at age seventy, he died in Pensacola, Florida following an extended illness. Stan is survived by his devoted wife of forty-six years, Faye Boyd Carter; one son, Eric Carter, one daughter, Gail Carter (husband Malik) Hardwick; two grandchildren, Carmen and Mason Hardwick; one sister, Caroline Osborne; one uncle, William Hundley, one niece, Anita Denning; one nephew, Michael Jackson; additional relatives and many, many friends. A service of thanksgiving for the life of Commander Carter will be held Saturday, Nov. 22 at 1:00 PM at Mustin Beach Officers Club aboard Pensacola Naval Air Station. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery in Virginia with full military honors in April 2015.
