Donald "Steve" Newman, 68, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Monday, November 26, 2012, at the New London Nursing and Rehab Center. Visitation will begin after noon on Friday, November 30, 2012, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. that evening. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 1st at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Courtney officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Hospice of Central Iowa Care Services Wish Program or the New London Nursing and Rehab Center. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com. Born January 26, 1944, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Donald Stephen was the son of Donald Worth and Eleanor Ann (Hannum) Newman. A lifelong resident of Mt. Pleasant, Steve attended school in the Mt. Pleasant Community Schools and graduated from high school in 1962. On February 2, 1964, he married Janice "Jan" Miller at the Trinity Methodist Church in Mt. Union, Iowa. Steve worked as a maintenance supervisor at Crane Manufacturing in Washington, IA for 19 years. More recently he worked as a water superintendent at Mt. Pleasant Utilities. After 20 years in this position, he retired in 2008. An avid coon hunter, Steve belonged to the Skunk River Coon Hunters Association, the United Kennel Club, and the Southeast Iowa Pidgeon Association. An avid musician, he enjoyed all kinds of music and played bass and rhythm guitar in the Cimmarons. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family. Survivors include his wife, Jan, of Mt. Pleasant; two daughters, Victoria (Mark) Messer of Mt. Pleasant, and Shelly Kegmann of Winfield, IA; one son, Don (Pam) Newman of Riverside, IA; 8 grandchildren, Bryce, Lucas and Kalli Messer, Amy and Chelsie Kegmann, Matt Zachmeyer, and Meghan and Sarah Newman; a great-granddaughter, Abi Zachmeyer; two brothers, Dick (Kathy) Newman of Brighton, IA, and Bob (Sheila) Newman of Mt. Pleasant, IA; and two sisters, Martha Lee and Phyllis (Billy) Davis all of Mt. Pleasant, IA. Preceding Steve in death are his parents; and a sister, Trudy McGuire.
