Retired Morgantown City Police Dept. Lt. Roy Earl Zinn, III, age 67, of Morgantown, passed away late Wednesday evening, December 4, 2019 at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.

He was born November 24, 1952 in Morgantown, a son of Grace Adeline Lanham Zinn of Morgantown, and the late Roy Earl Zinn, Jr.

Roy is survived by his wife Frances Jeanne Jeannie Malott Zinn whom he married in Morgantown on December 22, 1973; his children, Angie Bell and husband Eric of Morgantown, and Roy E. Zinn, IV and fiancee` Anna Dongweck of Lynchburg, VA; grandchildren Elijah and Wyatt Zinn and their mother Erin Pearson (Candice) of Greenville, NC; his bonus grandsons Bryce Riley and Ethan Pearson; a brother, Danny Zinn of Morgantown; sisters-in-law JoAnn Hill and husband Randy, and Janet Stone all of Morgantown, and Jennifer Sisk of Fairmont; niece and nephews Joshua Shuttlesworth and wife Jocelyn, Logan Sisk, and Ashley Williams and husband David; and a great-niece Bria Williams.

Roy was a proud graduate of University High School; class of 1970 and a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Vietnam era. He retired from the Morgantown Police Department with the rank of Lieutenant after 22 years of faithful service, with nine of those years as a K-9 officer. He then continued working as a TSA Supervisor in Morgantown.

He had an inquisitive mind and could never learn enough about everything around him. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, being in the outdoors, campfires, and working around his property. A good cigar was known to help him pass the time, and in his own words:

I was a good dad, a good husband, and I never meant to hurt anyone.

At his request, Roy has been cremated.

Friends may join the family to honor Roys life and legacy at Smith Funeral Cremation Care, 108 Holland Ave., Westover / Morgantown on Sunday, December 8th from 3:00 - 7:00 PM and again on Monday, December 9th from 10:00 AM until the time of the Memorial Service at 11:00 AM with Pastor Ed Moats officiating.

"Jeanne, I am very saddened to learn of Roy's recent death. It was always a pleasure to have him in our office. I know that it is never easy coping and healing from the death of a family member but losing your soul mate creates a huge hole in your heart. The most difficult thing about taking care of people for long periods is learning of their death. We did not have a class in school to prepare us for the loss of patients and the depth of the relationships that we develop by caring for such wonderful people. Your husband, Roy, certainly was one of those wonderful people and we will miss him! We are praying for your peace and healing and wonderful memories to fill you mind."
