In loving memory of

Joan Marie Candler
August 1, 1936 - May 10, 2014

August 1, 1936 - May 10, 2014 Joan Marie Candler, preceded in death by her parents, Aaron and Rosie Bell, was born on August 1, 1936 at St. Mary's Infirmary in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the second oldest of her parents children. Joan graduated from Sumner High School and moved from St. Louis to Berkeley, CA to attend UC Berkeley. Her plans were to study pathology, but a young United States Army soldier, the late William Perry Candler, found her and they united in Holy Matrimony on April 8,1956. Her first few years of marriage were spent as a military wife in Frankfurt, Germany from 1956-1959. Just before leaving Germany, she gave birth to their first daughter, who preceded her in death, Loretta Marie Candler. As an Army wife her children were born in nearly all parts of the United States. Her second daughter, Sandra, arriving in Ft Hood, Texas, Gloria in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina and Cynthia in Ft. Ord, California. As the wife of a Drill Sergeant, she could be found every holiday cooking for not only her family, but the young GI's her husband would bring home for the holidays. She worked for many years as a Programmer Analyst for the government and the City of San Diego. She retired to her home in Lemon Grove in 1986 and spent well-deserved time with her then retired husband. God blessed her to be very artistic as a fabulous cook, a creative seamstress, an artist who painted her favorites themes of seascapes and portraits. She knitted , crocheted, and always would share her knowledge. She battled breast cancer twice and became an advocate to help find a cure, she always fought a good fight. She went back to the age-old tradition of quilting taught to her by her grandmother "Momma Babe", as she was lovingly called, and received a grant to teach the community the quilting skills she had learned. She was a loving and devoted sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Most remembered will be her smile and her laughter. If you ventured past her tough exterior you found a woman who loved deeply. After rekindling her love for Jesus Christ at Faith Chapel Church of God in Christ, she became a devoted Sunday School participant. Even when her health tried to prevent her attendance, she would "press" her way to church and Bible study, because she loved to study the Word of God. She will be greatly missed by all who came to know her. Joan Marie Candler departed this life on Saturday May 10, 2014. She leaves to cherish her loving memories, remember her smile, and anticipate a reunion one day her three daughters, Sandra Y. Candler-Wafer and her husband Patrick Wafer, Sr.; and Gloria L. Candler, both from San Diego; and Cynthia M. (Candler) Tolson of Virginia. Her five brothers, Aaron and John of St. Louis MO.; Gerald of Nevada, Michael of Altadena,CA; Marvin of San Diego, CA; and Walter Bell who preceded her in death. Six grandchildren, Renee, Christopher, Justin, Simone, Christian, and Perry; one great-grandchild, Darius, and a host of other relatives and devoted friends. ~Mothers hold their children's hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.~
