In loving memory of

Barbara Maas
October 9, 1944 - May 8, 2020

Williamsburg- Barbara Gail Maas of Des Moines and formerly of Williamsburg passed away Friday, May 8, 2020 at her home at the age of 75. Barb was born October 9, 1944 in Algona, IA to Garel and Bernice Leek. She graduated from Corwith-Wesley High School in 1962 and received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the State College of Iowa (University of Northern Iowa) in 1966. Barb taught for thirty-three years, most of that time spent educating third graders in the Williamsburg Community School District. For twenty-five of those years you could find her in the evenings keeping score for the Raider basketball teams. She loved teaching and made a lasting impact on the hundreds of kids that resided in her classroom. Barb retired in 2010 to spend more time with her grandchildren.
Barb loved watching her children and grandchildren play sports, cheering for the Hawkeyes, and yelling at the Cubs. In retirement she turned her competitive spirit to playing bridge in Des Moines. Her grandchildren recall hours spent reading with Grammie.
She is survived by her sister Janice (Tim) Long, brother-in-law Bill Funnemark, children Rick (Heather) Maas of Grinnell, Tyler (Kim) Maas of Urbandale, and Ann (Bill) Reid of Columbus, IN. She will be lovingly remembered by her five grandchildren, Brecken, Henry, Caleb, Sailor and Kate. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Carol.

"To the Barbara Maas Family, my name is Daniel Reed, my Grandmother was Cecil ( Aunt Cele ) Frazier ( nee Jones ) . My grandmother and Barb taught together for decades in Williamsburg. Grammie always spoke highly of Barb. Their type of dedication is what driven Williamsburg Schools to a very high level. Barb\'s dedication, to her students is to be admired. In my travels up to Macomb to see mom and dad , I would stop at the Amana to see Barb, she was / is still a joy. My Mother Mary Reed ( Cecile\'s daughter ) and Barb were close friends. unfortunately mom was called home, by the Lord, in 2005. You have my deepest sympathies, and heartfelt condolences. Your Blessing is that you have all those wonderful memories to cherish, with your mother / grandmother. God Bless Peace be with you. In Christ\'s Love; Daniel "

"So sorry to hear about the loss of Barb, or Ms. Mass, as I knew her. She was my third grade teacher and a special one at that! I still have a photo of her on the playground that she allowed me to take for my third grade memory book. I know how much she loved her own kids and the many kids she taught as a teacher and treated as her own. She is one of the teachers who inspired me to become a teacher. I can only imagine what a wonderful grandma she must have been. "
