Gladys Marie Sheek

March 5, 1920 - October 19, 2016

Gladys was raised in Iowa and went to preparatory school where she played basketball during her high school years. She was raised on a farm with her 6 siblings, where she worked hard farming from a young age. In her twenties, she left for California and never looked back.

She married Gerald (Gib} Sheek on October 15, 1946 in Yuma, Arizona. They made their home in South Gate, California.

They had 6 children together: David, James, Nancy, Jerry, Mary, and Daniel.

Gladys enjoyed making breakfast every morning and included all of her childrens friends, and when her sons played football, members of the team came to eat her delicious food.

She was very active with church and helped with her childrens church activities including cooking for retreats. She also enjoyed making quilts with the womens group and volunteered in the nursery.

Gladys was a member of Bethany Chapel, then Glad Tidings and First Family Church of Whittier.

Gladys was blessed with 12 grandchildren: Scott, Jennifer, David, Carey, Nicole, Cory, Katie, Kyle, Joshua, Ryan, Jonathan, and Kelly.

She was also blessed with 3 great-grandchildren: Austin, Aubrey and Peyton.

Gladys enjoyed traveling: Monday outings with her sister-in-law Freeda (to get away from kids, haha}, camping with the family, enjoying the sun and swimming in Desert Hot Springs (where she and her husband Gib owned a home), across the U.S., Hawaii, and even overseas including the Holy Lands and her father's birthplace, Sweden.

Some of her simple pleasures included reading extensively (oftentimes she would fall asleep reading), going jeeping at the river with family, playing card games, board games with family and friends, jigsaw puzzles (don't mess up her organization, she was called the puzzle lady), playing basketball with her children and later grandchildren well into her 70s, and even attempted skateboarding with her grandkids.

She was a very strong woman and lived a long and fulfilling life. She will be dearly missed.
