"I was a student at horizon academy in 8th grade on 2014. The students referred to her as Mrs. Duran, the first time I spoke to her was at lunch. I had just arrived at the U.S from Cuba and knew no English, it was my first day of school. She was sweet and very welcoming as she tried to communicate with me. She guided me that first day of school and for the rest of that year I would greet her when I saw her around. I even remember one time I was at the cafeteria eating and some students were talking about me but I had no idea what they were saying; Sophia walked up to my chair with the hugest smile and said, "Oh honey don't worry about it, they're just saying that you're cute". I didn't fully understand her but I got the message. In other ocassions she would do the same thing to try to make me feel comftorable and kind of fit in. Thanks to her I didn't always feel left out and as a young kid that mattered to me. I'll never forget how much love she put into her work and students. My sincerest condolences to her family."
