In 1977 Richard was awarded the state recipient for the Iowa Horticulture Project at the National 4-H Congress in Chicago. Richard attended Iowa State University. In 1983 he received his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and in 1994 earned his Master's degree in Public Administration. During graduate school, Richard was selected for membership in Phi Kappa Phi National Academic Honorary Society.

Throughout his life, Richard's main focus was to care for his parents. He also worked as a real estate appraiser in the Ames City Assessors Office, as a licensed real estate agent in Glenwood, and as a rural letter carrier with the U.S. Mail in Hastings.

Richard resided at the family home on Lincoln Avenue in Malvern. In 2014 he relocated to Glenwood, IA, where he met a new circle of friends at the Frontline Church and at McDonald's. Iowa State Cyclones was Richard's passion. He also enjoyed hiking, golfing with his college buddies, antique horse saddles, potluck dinners, his father's woodworking crafts, and his mother's fruit cocktail cookies. One of Richard's hobbies was to drop in on friends, neighbors and relatives for a home cooked meal and a "good ole conversation", reminiscing about visits to Rocky Mountain National Park and the Chamberlain Cabin in Diamond City, Arkansas.

Richard passed away on April 9, 2020, at the Atlantic Specialty Care Center, having reached the age of 60 years, 5 months and 29 days. He was preceded in death by his parents.

"Sara and I were saddened to hear of Richard's passing. He was a pleasant, caring guy, and a good conversationalist. He showed interest in people, and always had a kind word, especially for the elderly. HIs academic success and friendly manner offered great promise for his life but struggles with Alzheimers left a tragic end. We were so sorry life dealt him such a terrible blow. "

"I met Richard here in Ames at Iowa State University. We were both students on the same dorm floor. We became friends. Richard was a really nice guy. He really enjoyed Iowa State sporting events, especially basketball games at Hilton Coliseum back in the days of Johnny Orr and the Big Eight Conference. Richard left his employment in Ames to serve as a caregiver for his father. When he moved back to southwest Iowa we remained in touch over the years. His phone calls always brighten my day. My sympathies to his family and friends. - Rick Hansen, Ames IA"
