Richard "Red" Norman Lane (age 89), of Whittemore, Iowa passed away Thursday April 2, 2020 at the West Bend Care Center in West Bend, Iowa. He was born on June 27, 1930 on the family farm in Hobarton, Iowa to William Sr. and Marie (Leonard) Lane. In 1949, Red graduated from the Presentation Academy in Whittemore along with his wife Norma (Kollasch) Lane. Red and Norma were married on July 8, 1952 at St Michael's Church in Whittemore.
After graduation, Red worked for Gene Martini Gas Station, and then as an excavator for Leroy Elbert. He also was engaged in farming during both of those jobs. He purchased the excavation business from Leroy, and from 1973-1993 he and his brother-in-law Wayne Goodman operated Lane and Goodman Excavation and Gravel. Wayne was like a brother to him, along with being his business partner. Following their retirement, they sold the business to their sons Denny Lane and Brian Goodman.
Red enjoyed horseback riding, playing cards, cribbage, joking with people, and handing out candy to all the young kids in town. He was also quite the sports enthusiast: playing golf, baseball, and fast pitch softball. For 18 years, he refereed boys' and girls' basketball along with umpiring baseball and softball. Red was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Whittemore and was active in the Holy Name Society.
Red is survived by his wife of 67 years, Norma; three children: Cindy (Bob) Thompson of Leland, Iowa, Gail (David) Adkins of Caledonia, Illinois, and Denny (Jan) Lane of Whittemore, Iowa; four grandchildren: Clarissa Thompson, Jeff (Courtney) Adkins, Greg Adkins, and AJ Lane: one great granddaughter Eleanor Adkins; one sister LaVon Schattschneider; also many nieces, nephews, and other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren: Tony Lane and Aubrey Lane; two brothers: his twin James Lane, and William Lane Jr.; three sisters and their husbands: Dorthea (Everet) Etherington, Jean (Wallace) Mossefin, and Arleen (Rick) Blue; brother-in-law: Wayne Goodman.

"I can\'t think of Uncle Red without smiling, and this is an impact we should all hope that we can have on the lives of others. To my Aunt Norma and my cousins Gail, Cindy and Denny, thank you for allowing me to get to know Uncle Red and to have him as part of my life. For those of you who are interested, I penned a few of my memories of time with him in this column that I wrote shortly after his passing:

I regret that I will not be able to attend the visitation, as our youngest daughter\'s graduation ceremony is at the same time. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers -- as will Uncle Red.
Shane Goodman"

"Red always had that look that he was "up to something". Turns out, he usually was. They sat behind us in church and you be well-advised to look back before you sat down. :) I remember many a conversation as I played left filed at Noah's part and Norma and Red would sit out under the trees with Red trying to distract me, which he usually did. What a great guy! Great family! Thoughts and prayers to the Lane family."
