Susan Reyes Schumacher, known by friends and family as “Honey”, and “Nene”, age 55, passed away June 8, 2017, in Marquette. Susan was born in Sipocot, Camarines Sur, Philippines to the late Oscar Reyes and Felicisima Vasquez Reyes.
From an early age, Susan proved to be talented. She loved to sing, dance, play music, and, later in life, learned to be an incredible painter of artwork. Susan’s talent enabled her to tour the Middle East and Greece performing dance with a troupe from the Philippines. She was part of the family rock band and served as a high school teacher. Later, a sales job in Manilla opened the door for her to work in California in a Philippine import store with a former boss.
Susan had a gift for caring for sick people. This included her younger brother, Alvin, until he passed away at age 6, and her father before his passing. Friends later connected her to a family in Seattle to care for their mother.
Susan met her husband, Paul, online at the “Christian Café” in 2008. As a born-again Christian for over 30 years, Susan never dated since she wanted to “wait” until God told her who the “right man” was, and never thought of being courted by a man who was not a Christian. Susan and Paul continued to communicate online until December 2012 when Paul flew to Seattle to meet Susan. They instantly realized they were in love, and two weeks after returning to Marquette, Paul asked Susan to marry her. They married May 1, 2013 in Seattle, but made their home in Marquette.
Within a year, Paul, a now disabled and retired contractor, got a call to repair a large home with a large lot in the City of Marquette. This enabled Susan to become a homemaker and made her mark on the home and gardens. Susan must have planted hundreds of bulbs, and created amazing paintings. In addition, she made the interior a loving and special home. She also got a part time job at the Thai House Kitchen and made her impact on the owners, staff and customers.
In the summer of 2015, Susan acquired a small cough. After a trip to the Philippines in November 2015 to visit and meet her family and her homeland, her cough worsened. On February 1, 2016, Susan was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer even though she never smoked. For the next year and a half Susan received treatment and showed improvement in May 2017, but radiation therapy didn’t stop the spread of cancer which eventually took her life.
Until Susan’s last day, her faith in Jesus never wavered. She read her bible, prayed all day long with Paul, and believed she would be healed here on earth. However, God chose to heal her in Heaven.
Susan is survived by her loving husband Paul, her “Mama” Felicisima, brothers Rey, Robert and Oscar “JoJo” Junior, and sisters Rosemary, Emma, Elsie, Sonia “Sweetie”, and Annabelle, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Services will be at NorthIron Church in Ishpeming on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 6:30 pm. A reception will immediately follow. Susan will be laid to rest at the Park Cemetery in Marquette.

"I am truly sorry for the loss and pain that Paul and the Schumacher, Reyes family and friends are feeling because of losing Susan recently in death. Most of us have had to endure the sorrow of losing a loved one in death. What helped me the most was prayer and faith in God's promises like found here at 1 Corinthians 15: 26 and it tells us: "And the last enemy, death, is to be brought to nothing." God's kingdom that Jesus taught us to pray for at Matt. 6: 9, 10 will bring about these wonderful promises, including the resurrection. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow, but we are all guaranteed a resurrection. (John 5:28, John 6:40, John 11:23-25) Also, Titus 1: 2 tells us this promise of a resurrection: "is based on a hope of the everlasting life that God, who cannot lie, promised long ago." Isaiah 26:19 "Your dead will live......And the earth will let those powerless in death come to life." Isaiah 25:8 "He will swallow up death forever. For Jehovah himself has spoken it." Our loving God, Jehovah (Psalm 83:18) invites you to throw all your burdens on him and he will sustain you in your time of grief.
