Marie E. McClintock, 95, of Marquette, passed away peacefully at her home Friday evening, March 30, 2012 with her loving family at her side and in the care of Lake Superior Hospice.
Marie was born on March 12, 1917 in Victoria, Michigan, a daughter of the late William and Emma Louise (Spitz) Richards. Her family moved to Marquette in 1925. Marie graduated from Bishop Baraga High School in 1934, received a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Michigan University in 1938, and received a Master's degree in Education from the University of Michigan in 1944.
Marie taught Kindergarten through 4th grade as well as junior high school English for many years and in several different school districts. She retired in 1977 from Gladstone Area Public Schools.
In her retirement, Marie enjoyed and became proficient at both oil and watercolor painting, having shown some of her paintings at Art on the Rocks in Marquette and at the Gladstone Bank. She and her husband, Walter, also enjoyed traveling across the U.S. in their motor home.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church as well as its altar society, previously serving as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. She was also choir director and president of the altar society at St. Augustine's church in Republic for many years. She is a past president of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women in the Marquette Diocese.
Marie is survived by three children, William (Leslie) McClintock of Santa Rosa, CA, Ann (Jim) Savera of Marquette and Robert (Brady) McClintock of Tahoe City, CA; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (John) VanDerKolk, Whitney (Ken) Stager, Mark McClintock, Megan McClintock, Morgan McClintock, Diane (Nick) Melnyk, and Jason Savera; also seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents was her loving husband of 64 years, Walter J. McClintock whom she married on August 26, 1944 in New London, Connecticut and who passed away on October 24, 2009; also a daughter, Rose McClintock in 1985 and five siblings, Ursula Solomon, Maurice, William, Bernard and Weldon Richards.
Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Sunday, April 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. where a parish prayer service will be recited at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will also take place at St. Michael Catholic Church on Monday, April 2 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 2 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Michael's with the Rev. Larry VanDamme officiating and concelebrated by Rev. Nicholas Thompson and Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jim Savera, John VanDerKolk, Mark McClintock, Morgan McClintock, Jason Savera, Dan Mazzuchi, Ed Noel and Frank Allen.
