"Condolences to the Pavlik family on the loss of a loved one."
Dr. Philip Pavlik, 69, of 1821 W. Fair Ave., Marquette, died peacefully Sunday evening, August 16, 2009 at his home.
Dr. Pavlik was born on October 4, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois, a son of Irvin and Marcella (Jerlinga) Pavlik, Sr.
Philip received a PhD in Chemistry in 1967 from the University of Michigan. He was hired by Northern Michigan University that same year, working as a professor in their Chemistry Department until his retirement in 1998.
He was a pioneer in using computers in Chemistry education, physical chemistry and quantum mechanics. His computer simulations allowed students to generate three dimensional results-to see their work in away not possible with available hardware. He had a passion for teaching at all levels, and developed a reputation as an excellent professor. He often tutored students in his office to be sure they could understand difficult concepts and remained in contact with some graduates for many years.
Philip enjoyed programming and web design, reading, and classical music. He developed an appreciation for fine food and enjoyed near daily trips to super markets to suit his taste. He loved the challenge of a difficult crossword puzzle.
He had an enduring fondness for Presque Isle Park and could appreciate its beauty even after his illness became incapacitating. Finally, he had an intensity of nature which fueled and refined his work
ethic and ultimately a life well lived.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Mary Kay Belmore of Marquette; two cherished sons, Dr. Philip (Rachel Ankney) Pavlik, Jr. of Pittsburgh, PA and Andrew (Amy Coyne) Pavlik of Minneapolis, MN; his mother, Marcella Pavlik of Elmhurst, IL; two brothers, Robert (Rose) Pavlik of Elmhurst, IL and Irvin (Anita Celli) Pavlik, Jr. of Wheaton, IL; his first wife, Kay Payant of Marquette; also several nieces and nephews and the expected arrival of his first grandson by son, Andy and his wife, Amy. He was preceded in death by his father, Irvin Pavlik, Sr.
At Dr. Pavlik's request, a private memorial celebration will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred in Dr. Pavlik's memory to NMU Public Radio 90, 1401 Presque Isle Ave., Marquette, MI 49855.
