Mary Eleanor Wojcik, 96, of Marquette died Saturday, December 1, 2007 at the Norlite Nursing Center in Marquette.
Born February 2, 1911 in Marsteller, Pennsylvania to John and Sofia (Wojdyla) Wojcik, Mrs. Wojcik moved with her family to Barnesboro, Pennsylvania, before relocating to New Jersey at 16 years of age. On May 9, 1937 she married Raymond Martin Wojcik and settled in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where she raised her family and resided for 33 years. She was an inspector at MGM Records in Bloomfield from the 1950s until closure of the plant in 1971. She then worked at Prototype, a manufacturer of transformers, in East Orange, New Jersey, until retiring in 1973.
A summer visitor to Marquette since 1976, Mrs. Wojcik
moved here from Cedar Grove, New Jersey in 2003. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed gardening, cooking, crocheting, reading and traveling. Throughout her life she was known for her keen mind, sense of humor, boundless energy and outspokenness. Proud of her Polish heritage, she was fluent and literate in that language. She particularly valued education and was a storehouse of family history and memories, which she delighted in sharing with her extended family and friends.
Mrs. Wojcik was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Raymond, who died in 1997; a brother Joseph; and sisters Helen, Anne and Cecilia.
Survivors include sons, Dr. John (Mary) Wojcik of Marquette and Raymond (Kathleen) Wojcik of Wayne, New Jersey; grandsons, Michael (Dawn) of Cedar Grove, New Jersey, Peter (Jacki) of Plymouth, Michigan, and Daniel (Dr.Jennifer) of Boone, Iowa; a granddaughter, Barbara "Basia" Wojcik of Dallas, Texas; and great-grandchildren Sophia and Cecilia Wojcik of New Jersey, Casey and Brody Wojcik of Michigan and Dmitri and Elinor Wojcik of Iowa. Also surviving are siblings, Anthony of Pensacola, Florida, Stanley of Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, Edna Mattie of Highland Lakes, New Jersey, and John of Spangler, Pennsylvania. Among numerous nephews and nieces, also surviving is her grand niece, Dr. Patricia Callahan of Marquette.
A private visitation will be held at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home in Marquette. Visitation will also be held at the Shook Funeral Home in Cedar Grove, New Jersey on Saturday, December 8th from 8:30 to 10 a.m. where services will take place in the funeral home at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will follow immediately at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, Marys family requests that donations be made in her name to St. Louis the King Catholic Church, 264 Silver Creek Road, Marquette, MI 49855 or to the Norlite Nursing Center Patient Activity Fund, 701 Homestead, Marquette, MI 49855.
