In loving memory of

RICHARD CHARLES COOMBS
July 11, 1941 - May 2, 2007

Eben Junction Richard Charles Coombs died peacefully at home on May 2, 2007.

He was born July 11, 1941, in Alpena, Michigan to Moore Thomas and Ruth Marie (Kearly) Coombs. Richard graduated from Hillman High School, Alpena Community College and Northern Michigan University (NMU). Richard taught Biology, Natural Resources and Drivers Education in the Marquette Area Public Schools (MAPS) for 32 years. He also coached the JV football team at MAPS for eight years. Upon retirement he built his dream house and farm in Eben Junction.

Richard was a lifelong educator and loved to spend time teaching others about the outdoors. He served on the Marquette County Board for six years in the late 70s and early 80s; he was a founding member of the Citizens to Save Superior Shoreline, the organization which fought to preserve Little Presque Isle. Richard was appointed to the Acocks Medical Board where he served as Chairman for six years. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, West Brach Sportsman Club and the Retired Teachers Association of Michigan. In addition, Richard served on the Marquette County Soil Conservation Board, and upon moving to Eben Junction joined the Alger County Soil Conservation Board; he was selected to serve on the State, Regional and then National Soil Conservation Board.

His first trip to the Upper Peninsula was as a young boy of 12 with his Boy Scout Troop to canoe the Tahquamenon River from McMillian to the falls, camping along the way. Richard again visited the U.P. as a junior in high school to attend NMUs band camp. Richard fell in love with the U.P. and moved his family here in 1964 to attend NMU. Richard enjoyed life and subscribed to the theory that life is best by practicing random acts of kindness. He enjoyed his canoe trips to Canada, camping in all seasons with family, friends and students, pheasant hunting out west, deer hunting, fishing over the years in streams, ponds and the big lakes. He loved the card games and playing pool with many friends over the years. He loved music and often recalled playing taps for the fallen soldiers when he was young. Sitting at his camp on the Escanaba River with a good cup of coffee, reading was one of his favorite pastimes.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Phyllis Arlene (Brandt); children, Lisa Ann Coombs-Gerou, husband Thomas of Marquette, Shane Richard Coombs, wife Laurel of Warrenville, IL, Aaron Charles Coombs of Omro, WI, and Rhet Harrison Coombs, wife Tonya of Ishpeming. Richard had 7 grandchildren of whom he was very proud; Andrew, Megan and Kylie Coombs, Nicole Gerou, and Reilly, Shayla and Ashlyn Coombs. Two infant daughters, Shawn Theresa and Ivy Lynn, his parents, brothers Thomas Moore and infant brother Harry preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the YMCA of Marquette County, 1420 Pine Street, Marquette, Michigan 49855.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 11 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Josephs Church, 1889 Prairie, Ishpeming with Father James Challancin officiating. A dinner celebrating Richards life will be held after the mass in the church hall. Richard requested that attendees to his celebration of life wear bright/spring colors.

Jerry Brumm wrote on Apr 6, 2009:

"To Lisa and the extended Coombs family: I was sad to read of your dads passing. Above and beyond his legacy as a teacher and coach at Marquette High and all of the great things he did for his students, his athletes, and the Marquette sports community, he was just plain and simply a good and decent guy. He was especially nice to my dad, my mother, and to me and my siblings. He always had a big smile, a hearty hand shake, and nice things to say to us, or about us. He was also one of a very few select people who had the decency and thoughtfulness to visit my dad when he was ill and in his final days. Not so coincidently, he was also the life of my fathers going away party and made sure everyone and anyone who was there remembered my dad and knew about the positive, and often-times funny adventures they shared. Death of a family member is never pleasant, nor fun. But, I hope the entire Coombs family can walk around Marquette and the U.P. with your head held high - this week and always - with a mighty big grin your dad was a hell of a guy and truly a mans man. My very best of thoughts and condolences during your time of loss. Jerry Brumm"

"If there was ever someone to look to as a role model, a man you'd want your son to grow up to emulate, it was Dick Coombs. I did not know him well, but each time we'd bump into each other, he would remember me, and call me by name. Dick was instrumental in helping to fight a huge environmental case back in the 70s -- the Reserve Mining Company's dumping of its taconite tailings into Lake Superior from its mine in Minnesota. At the time I was press secretary to U.S. Senator Robert P. Griffin, and he allied himself with Mrs. Verna Mize, a single citizen living in the Washington DC area (and a native of the Copper Country), who started the "crusade" against Reserve Mining. Dick was helpful in many, many ways and eventually we won the case. The dumping was stopped. I was saddened to learn of his passing. He leaves a large footprint in our beloved Upper Peninsula... "Mr Coombs was one of those special teachers that you will never forget. My best memory was when he took our class on January 14th up near Big Bay for a winter survival overnighter..... It was 14 below minus windchill, and he had me and a friend set up a shelter in a swamp, Well we learned how to survive, we woke up ( or never slept ) at 2 am and walked down to Mr Coombs campsite to find him in front of a large fire cooking up some venision heart. Never enjoyed a fire and a hot meal and conversation about the outdoors like that again... Thanks Mr. Coombs !!"

His classroom was one where the lesson of respecting the individual began with his respect for his students and moved to include nature and the environment. He made me think, he made me ponder, he made me consider what could be, not just what was. My prayers are with your family."

"It is with the greatest sadness that we send our condolences to you today. Your husband, father, grandfather was a great man and though we lost contact in recent years we thought of him often. He was a great educator and conservationist. Of all those I have met while going to school and teaching over these last 50 years he is the one who made a difference in my life and one of the few who I have seen actually care for students and the environment. He did what was right even though administration may have thought differently and for this we thank him. He taught me to study, fly fish, do taxidermy, canoe, respect the outdoors, and to stand up for my own beliefs. As a young girl in 1970 that was very important. Our hearts are with you all. "Mr. Coombs was one of my favorite High School teachers. There were many memories shared with him during those times, but the one I remember most is when I was leaving the HS one day and went to my car (I was sooooo cooooool being a driver!) and my car had a flat tire. Mr. Coombs was leaving the building and saw me standing there and said, "looks like you've got a flat tire, I think we should change it." I had never changed a flat tire, and would not have figured it out on my own. He walked me through it, showing me all the ways to make it safe. That's the kind of guy he was, always there to lend a hand, always concerned about what would improve a situation. He was larger than life."

"Mr Coombs was my favorite teacher hands down. He was also someone I always liked talking to. I might see him on the streets downtown or I might even encounter him in the woods(if I was lucky) that was rare as he knew all the best places to find solitude. His love of nature is what I will always carry with me. He instilled this deep appreciation of nature in me. I took his Natural Resources class in my sophmore year. It changed my life. I must admit I initially took it to avoid Louise T's biology class. Fortunately for me it was one of the best choices I could have made. Why. Because he taught me that it was ok for a girl to love nature and he taught me that it didnt matter that I was a girl, that I could do what ever I wanted to do. That my opinions were just as valuable as any guys in the class. BAck then it really was not the norm. He had a genuine respect for everyone. He gave the message that it was ok to be yourself. His encouragement meant alot to me. It influenced my decision to pursue a career in Natural Resources. I have Mr. Coombs to thank for that. It is a path I am grateful I have taken.I am not so sure I would have gone down that path without his encouragment. Dick Coombs was simply, a great human being. There are so few that reach the level of actualization that he did. He embodied kindness. He loved life and shared his passion for life with everyone. I am grateful to have know and been mentored by him. Many years had passed since I had him in school. I lived away for 25 years. I passed him on the stree on a visit home. He called me by name, asked what I was doing with my life, looked deeply into my eyes and really cared the about the answers. I will always love and respect him for being one of those rare individuals who speak the truth and care about people and how they are doing in their lives and how we are treating each other and taking care of the earth. He was many things to many people. WE are all better people for having him in ourlives.I will truly miss him."

Once a student asked him why he always said this, and with a smile on his face he replied, "by saying this, the class starts off on a good note. After that, it may go to hell in a hand-basket". We nutured them and sacrificed for them and they in turn minister to us and give us the greatest blessing of grand children. May they give you joy and comfort at this time. I read about Dick at my sister Beth's house, where I was taking care of our mother February, March and April after she fell and broke her leg and had a pin put in her hip. I had just recently been laid off from the bank, as they had illiminated my position in the process of cutting back. She is doing well and Sister Edie has taken over for now and we have moved Mom back home. May you seek comfort from our Lord and his precious promises in His Word. Psalm chapter 139 is my favorite. Then there is St. John chapter 19. Jesus's prayer for us. May God's blessings be upon you. With prayers and Love, Coz. Amy Melvin"
