"Dear Mrs Hartwig and Sharon Johnson, While I did not know your husband and father really well, it was my pleasure to know him as a helicopter pilot and administrator of the MAST (Military Assistance to Safety and Traffic) squadron at Sawyer. Jim was very supportive of the mission to support civilian medevac and rescue services in the early days of establishing EMS across the entire Upper Peninsula. His work in that arena was very much appreciated. I know he will be missed by his family and friends. With every best wish to you and yours, I remain. . . Robert Manning"

"To the family of Jim Hartwig: Jim was one of the first persons I met coming to the U.P. in January 1977. I am an Emergency Dispatcher at the Negaunee Post and more than once talked to Jim while he flew Rescue missions around the U.P. When the MAST squadron deactivated I dug up all the reports involving the State Police and the unit and made copies and gave them to Jim. I served in the USArmy on Hueys so we had an instant bond. I am sorry I never got out on his boat with him. He always "road me hard" about that. I just wanted to share this and to very proadly state that I knew Jim and will miss him alot. May God bless him and his family"
