Rebecca F. Becky Nystrom, 93, formerly of 222 S. Fifth Street, Marquette, died Sunday afternoon at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she had resided since 1999.
Becky was born on June 3, 1908 in Negaunee to the late William and Clara (Ebner) Garceau and was a 1926 graduate of Negaunee High School. She married Carl Nystrom on September 18, 1931 in Marquette and was later employed by Cohodas Brothers in Marquette for 17 years.
Becky was a devout member of St. Peter Cathedral for over 40 years and was also an active member of the VASA Lodge. She enjoyed painting, playing cards, and spending time at her sons cottages with her grandchildren.
Surviving are two sons, Carl W. Buck (Joan) Nystrom and Robert (Evelyn) Nystrom, both of Marquette; three grandchildren, Kyle (Cherise) Nystrom of Ft. Worth, TX, Nicole (Dan) Newhouse of Redford, MI and Vince (Nikki) Nystrom of Brighton, MI; three great grandchildren, Logan, Meagan and Robert Nystrom; one sister, Marjorie Melcher of Dayton, OH; a brother, Willis Garceau of Negaunee, MI; also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents was her husband, Carl Buck Nystrom, Sr. in 1976; a sister, Goldie Garron and two brothers, Wilbert and Lawrence Garceau.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Peter Cathedral with the Rev. Msgr. Louis C. Cappo officiating. Interment will take place in the Park Cemetery. Family and friends will gather from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the mass in the Bishops Room of the Cathedral. Beckys family will serve as her escorts.
