Mark Cyril VanAbel
September 30, 1913 - April 30, 2002

Mark Cyril VanAbel, 88, of 2120 Waldo Street, Marquette, died Tuesday morning at his home following a lengthy illness.

Mr. VanAbel was born September 30, 1913 in Pequaming, MI, a son of the late Cyril & Dora (Anderson) VanAbel. On April 22, 1939 he married the former Frances Prost in Baraga, MI. They had recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge #1059 and earned the rank of Pilgrim for his efforts in volunteer work for the lodge. He was a proud father of six sons and a loving grandfather. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, gardening, smoking fish and making pasties.

Mr. VanAbel is survived by his wife, Frances of Marquette; sons, Cyril M. VanAbel of Big Bay, Robert (Frances) VanAbel of Hope Mills, NC, Roger (Janet) VanAbel, Carl (Gert) VanAbel and Jeff (Chris) VanAbel all of Marquette and Gary VanAbel of Big Bay; a brother, Paul VanAbel of LAnse; special cousin, Roy Anderson of Ishpeming; 12 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Dorothy & Grace preceded him in death.

Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Friday from 5 p.m. until the time of a funeral service at 7 p.m. Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick will be officiating. Inurnment will take place in Northland Chapel Gardens Cemetery.
