In loving memory of

Carolyn Yost

Carolyn S. Yost of Phoenix, AZ, passed away with her children at her side on May 29, 2017, after a surprisingly short illness with pancreatic cancer. Born on October 30, 1934, to missionary parents serving in the jungles of the Belgian Congo in Central Africa, she was raised speaking French and the local Tshiluba dialect. She moved permanently to the United States in 1953 to attend Bluffton College in Bluffton, Ohio. It was there that she met her husband of 38 years, Jerry Yost. After teaching elementary school during Jerry's medical training years in Philadelphia, PA, and Staten Island, NY, they moved to Arizona with the Indian Health Service to serve in Tuba City (1962-65), Fort Defiance (1967-1974) and Phoenix (1965-67, 1974-1993). After Jerry's passing from leukemia in 1995, Carolyn remained in Phoenix where hundreds came to love and know her through her steadfast work at First Mennonite Church and her decades of leadership with Bible Study Fellowship and the LifePoint bible study group. She travelled extensively around the world, but was happiest when she was with her children and grandchildren. Praying without fail for each of them every morning, she never missed a graduation, wedding, or other important life event. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, and her parents Russell and Helen Schnell. She is survived by three sisters; her children David Yost, Robert Yost, and Ellen Kaufman; as well as nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday June 10, 2017 at First Mennonite Church, 1612 W. Northern, Phoenix, AZ 85021. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in her name may do so to First Mennonite Church. Visit https://hansenmortuary.wpengine.com for condolences.

Tributes

Ruth and Dick Anderson wrote on Jun 7, 2017:

"Dear Yost Family, We were your next door neighbors in Ft. Defiance from 1967 to 1971. Since we moved to Sun City West in 1991 we have exchanged Christmas letters every year with your mother. We always admired how she was able to travel not only to all the major events in your family but country wide and abroad. We are sure you will miss your mother and grandma but with her strong faith in our Lord we know where she is. Our Love and Sincere Sympathy. Ruth and Dick Anderson"

Jackie Chida wrote on Jun 2, 2017:

"Dear Family, I'm sure you'll hear this many times, but I just have to tell you she was wonderful. She was so dedicated to the Lord's work, but fun to be around. She was my BSF group leader my first year with BSF and made it a special year. It cemented my desire to continue studying God's word in that environment. I'm so sorry for your loss. May God comfort you as only he can do! Jackie Chida"
