In loving memory of

Montgomery Hart

On Wednesday, September 25, 2013, Monty, beloved husband of Patty, passed away at Mayo Hospital, Phoenix, AZ. He is survived by sons Christopher (children Gabrielle and Maxwell); David (wife Donna and children Alexander, Nicholas and Lauren) and Michael (children Ella and Nathan); sisters Sandra (David) and Linda (Donald). He is predeceased by his brother Peter and parents Aida and Clifford Hart. Monty was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 6, 1931. During his student years he flew with the Canadian Air Force and graduated in 1958 in medicine from the University of Manitoba. He took his residency in Winnipeg and went from there to a fellowship in Boston, MA, later becoming a neonatologist. He was a pediatric professor at the University of Kansas and at the University of Missouri. In 1972 he moved his family to Phoenix, AZ and joined Neonatology Associated Ltd. There, he established the Perinatal Lab at St. Joseph's Hospital and started the Neonatal Screening program at that hospital, remaining as advisor throughout his medical career. He established the Phoenix annual High Frequency meetings and served as director until his retirement in 2000. Throughout these years he published and continued to write. At the time of his retirement he was Medical Director of Nurseries at St. Joseph's Hospital and Chairman of the Pediatric Committee. Monty's interests beyond medicine were broad. He loved the desert, its birds and flowers with photography playing well into these interests, and as a knowledgeable student of jazz, all his life he amassed a well rounded musical library. He and Patty shared an enjoyment of art particularly that of the Inuit people choosing sculptures, prints and artifacts of early work. Monty was a caring physician and a loving husband and father. He will be missed by many. A celebration of his life will be held for family and friends at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2013 at the Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix, AZ. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy (7600 N 15th St., Suite 100, Phoenix, AZ 85020).

Karen (Rauch) Reiman wrote on Oct 7, 2013:

"I started at St Joe\'s in 1972 as well as Dr Hart. I absolutely loved working with the trio...Meyer, Daily and Hart. I learned so much from Dr Hart as a new grad nurse and I continued till I left in 1997 now I\'m back there since 2006 and without a doubt the hardest thing to get used to was not having any member of the trio. Dr Hart was so funny too. He was knowledgeable in medicine, esp neonatology and yet he was so nice and would chat with you about anything. I have been mourning the trio\'s retirements lol and now sadly and with heartfelt sorrow for his family, I am mourning the loss of his earthly life. You are so blessed to have had him as a husband, father, grandfather and brother. Great man, great doctor and he will be missed."

Mary Small wrote on Oct 7, 2013:

"I was sorry to see the obituary of Dr. Hart yesterday. I worked at Good Samaritan Hospital from 1982-1989 in the NICU and Nursery and know what a fine and caring physician he was. He will be missed."

"I was so sad to see Monty\'s obituary in this morning\'s paper. I send my condolences to all the family. If my health is cooperative, I hope to be at the memorial service. I am assuming it is this coming Friday, October 11th? (The paper says September 11.) Patty, my heart goes out to you. Monty was a special friend -- especially to all the tiny ones he cared for."

Debi Archibald wrote on Oct 6, 2013:
