Vernon Lee Jenkins

Vernon Lee Jenkins, 88, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2019 at Grandview Heights Nursing Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at a later date. A private family burial will take place at Highland Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.
Vernon was born on February 12, 1931 in Chariton, Iowa to Tom and Martha (Stafford) Jenkins. He grew up in Chariton and graduated from Chariton High School with the class of 1950. He moved to Des Moines and began working for Firestone Tire. On November 18, 1956 he married the love of his life Shirley Christensen. The couple resided in Des Moines where they raised their family together. After 35 years at Firestone Vernon retired in 1986. In 1993 the couple relocated to Stockton, Missouri until moving to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 2014 to be closer to family. Vernon was a member of the USW Local 310 and attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids. He enjoyed spending time with family, hunting, fishing, being outdoors, and staying busy.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Shirley Jenkins; daughters Lori Jenkins, Sue Jenkins, and Kathy Benjamin; grandchildren Ryan and Holly Allliss, and Audrey Dorrian; and brother Arden ( Bev) Jenkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant daughter.
