Homer Ellis Nielsen
July 12, 1918 - September 15, 2007

Homer Ellis Nielsen, 89, lifelong resident of Austin, Texas died in San Marcos on Saturday, September 15,2007. He was born July 12, 1918, to Adelia and William F. Nielsen. He was preceeded in death by his wife of forty-one years, Ruth; two brothers, William Morris Nielsen and Fred Nielsen; two baby sisters, Dorothy Lee and Mary Louise, and his other loving sister, Lillian Nielsen Walker.Homer Ellis is survived by his daughter, Sandy Fortenberry, and her husband, Clyde ofKyle; and his son, Don Nielsen, and his wife, Vicky of Austin, two step-daughters, Dorris Livingstone, and husband Roy, of Dunedin, Florida, and Shirley Pulliam, and husband Clyde, of Hutto. He is also survived by two very special sisters, Mae Manning and husband, Mike, of Round Rock, and Ruth Smith and her husband, J.B., of Lago Vista. Homer has five grandchildren, Heather Casey and husband, Charle, of Kyle; Jessica, Katie and Lyndsay Nielsen of Austin, and Heather Lynn Pendergrast of Cedar Creek. He was blessed with one great-grandchild, Sage Edith Casey. Ellis also had very special nieces and nephews that were very close to his heart. He will always be their Uncle Bippy.Homer served in World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre in Company C, 33151 Engineer Combat Battalion and received several decorations during this service. He was always proud of his service to his country. Many friendships with continued throughout his lifetime with fellow officers.Homer was a member of Onion Creek Masonic Lodge No. 220, A.F.& A.M. for over fifty years. He attended the original Pleasant Hill school, which also served as the lodge building for the masons in the mid 1920's. He was very proud of his heritage and of his Grandfather coming to central Texas from Copenhagen, Denmark, who owned a cotton gin at St. Elmo Road and South Congress Avenue. Homer was instrumental in documenting family history for the historical marker on the Boggy Creek Masonic Cemetery in south Austin. Homer retired as Warehouse Manager in 1976 with over thirty years of service with the Eli Witt Cigar Company, a Hav-A- Tampa owned company, which was originally located at 4th and Colorado Street. His career with the company brought many wonderful friendships. Homer was baptized in Christ in 1956 at the Southside Church of Christ. He was a gentle man and will be missed for his kind heart and generosity.The Family of Mr. Nielsen expresses their gratitude to the nurses and staff of the CTMCHospice Care in San Marcos. Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 19, 2007, under the direction of Rev. Don R. Long at the Boggy Creek Masonic Cemetery, located on Circle S. Drive off of William Cannon. A celebration of Homer's life will be after the service at Onion Creek Masonic Lodge, 706 N. Bluff Drive, Austin, Texas.
