Dr. John Henry Meador, Sr., age 78, of Sugar Land, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Dr. Meador was born on May 25, 1935 in San Antonio. He obtained his B.S. degree from Baylor University and an M.D. degree from University of Texas at Galveston. He participated in teaching service in Pediatric, Thoracic, Vascular, and General Surgery and served as a Clinical Assistant in Surgery at Hermann Hospital, University of Texas. Being drafted out of his residency, he served as a Captain and a rated Air Force flight surgeon from 1962-1963. He finished his surgical residency in 1967 serving as Chief of Thoracic, General and Vascular Surgery in his final year of training. He became board certified in 1968 in General, Thoracic and Peripheral Vascular Surgery. Dr. Meador served as Chief of Surgery at Spring Branch Memorial Hospital in 1968, and at Sharpstown General Hospital from 1970-1974 and again from 1980-1984. At Sharpstown General Hospital, he also served as Chairman of the Credentials Committee in 1986, Vice Chief of Staff in 1986, Chief of Staff in 1987, and Chairman of the Surgery Department from 1991-1992. Dr. Meador was associated with the Hillcroft Medical Clinic Association where he served as its Secretary from 1983-1985 and again from 1994-1995, President in 1986, and Chairman of the Board in 1987. Dr. Meador organized and formed one of the first Non-Invasive Vascular Testing Laboratories in Houston at Sharpstown General Hospital where he served as its director from 1977 -1992. Dr. Meador was one of the first surgeons in Houston to perform laparoscopic gallbladder surgery.Dr. Meador served on the S.A.G.E.S. Credentials Committee from 1992-1999. He served as a member of the American Physicians Insurance Companys Board of Directors from 1977-2002 and was Chairman of the Board for three terms from 1995-1997. He served as all committees and as Chairman of the Claims Committee, Rates Committee, and Secretary of the Board and was nominated a Director Emeritus. Dr. Meador published studies and was a member of medical societies too numerous to list. Survivors are wife, Betty Meador, brother, Joe Meador and wife Bonnie of San Antonio, sister in law, Jo Lynn Meador, children, Andrew Meador, and wife, Heather, of Missouri City, John Meador, Jr. of Buda, Melanie Meador and partner, Cathy Morris, of Austin, Elizabeth Bruman and spouse, Steve, of Spring, step children, Tamara Hoey of Houston, Lisa Walker of Garland, Barbara Brownback, and husband, Larry, of Houston, Dianne Bielski, and husband, Matt, of Rockwall, and grandchildren, Michelle and Madeline Bruman, Kathryn Meador, Andrew and Caroline Meador, Henry Meador Morris, Brandon Cook, and wife, Kristin, Matthew, Macey, and Mark Bielski, Zachary, Micah, Noah and Jeremy Purdie, great grandchild, Finley Cook, and many nieces and nephews and their children. His family will remember him not for his professional accomplishments, but for his love of ranching, hunting, fishing, the great outdoors, Colorado, scholarly Biblical study, and in depth knowledge and study of many subjects. I learned of his death at a neighborhood Bible study tonight. I have thought of him often over the years with such thanks in my heart. I was certainly blessed to have known him."
