Eloise Johnson Godfrey
June 16, 1920 - November 19, 2014

Eloise Johnson Godfrey, 94, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 19 in Austin, Texas. She was born June 16, 1920 to Edith and John M. Johnson in Houston, Texas. Eloise graduated from the University of Houston and met the love of her life, Ralph Meybin Godfrey, while working at Schlumberger. Together they were blessed with two children, Janice and Mark, to whom she devoted her life and love raising in Tyler, Texas.Eloise and Ralph enjoyed traveling the world together with family and friends. Many joyful trips were made skiing and playing golf in Angel Fire, New Mexico.Eloise loved golf and played 53 years despite two knee replacements. One of her lifetime goals was to hit a hole in one which she accomplished at age 90 on the #2 Original Hole at the Onion Creek Club making local and international news. She was also an avid bridge player described by her fellow players as "always winning more than she should".Eloise had a philanthropic spirit making charitable donations to various organizations. She volunteered for 12 years at St. David's Medical Center gift shop in South Austin, recently retiring at age 94. Eloise was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, former VP of Howe-Baker International in Tyler, Texas and brother, John Fred Johnson.Eloise is survived and lovingly remembered by her sister, Monna Johnson Straw, her daughter Janice Godfrey Newell and husband Jim, her son Mark Ralph Godfrey and wife Mary, her grandchildren, Kristin Godfrey Mahrer and Matthew Mark Godfrey and their spouses and 2 great-grandchildren. Survivors also include a very loving extended family.Eloises energy, optimism for life and love for everyone around her will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her dearly.The family will receive friends from 3:00 - 5:00 pm, Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Harrell Funeral Home in Austin. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Manchaca United Methodist Church. A reception will follow the service at 3:30 PM at Onion Creek Club.Graveside services will be held 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Cathedral In The Pines Cemetery in Tyler, TX. A reception will follow the graveside service at 4:00 PM at Hollytree Country Club.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Sunshine Kids Foundation (www.sunshinekids.org), The Manchaca United Methodist Church (www.manchacaumc.org), or the charity of your choice.

"Eloise was a wonderful person. Caring, kind and funny.We spent most Fridays playing golf at the Onion Creek Club. I was always amazed at her endurance. She'd hit her ball and RUN after it while I came dragging along to mine. She was the best dressed golfer on the course and everywhere else. I loved her. I'm so sorry Monna."
