Carl Gerhardt Mensing
May 8, 1932 - September 26, 2018

Carl Gerhardt Mensing passed away Wednesday, September 26th at the age of 86 in Austin. He went peacefully to his eternal, heavenly home surrounded by his wife and family. He was born on May 8, 1932 in Blue Earth, Minnesota to Charles and Mary Mensing and was the ninth of ten children.
Carl enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in January 1951 and retired in January 1971 at the rank of Technical Sergeant. He attended Basic Military Training at Lackland AFB and aircraft engine school at Sheppard AFB. His first assignment was to Perrin AFB in Denton, TX. His next assignment at Webb AFB was where he met his wife, Geneva Fehler. Follow on assignments included OHare Field, Elmendorf AFB, Charleston AFB, Laredo AFB, Cam Ranh AB, and finally Bergstrom AFB, where he had his favorite job in the Air Force as a jet engine maintenance instructor at the field training detachment. During those 20 years, Carl worked on just about every type of fighter aircraft in the AF inventory. His service spanned the Korean Conflict, Viet Nam War and Cold War. His second career was spent as a power plant operator working for the City of Austin in the Power and Light Division. He retired in 1996 after 24 years. He then began working as an election judge for Travis County and continued performing volunteer work at his congregation, Christ Lutheran Church-Austin. He sang in the choir, directed the hand bell choir, served on the evangelism committee among others, and spent many years as a Stephen Minister.
Carl is predeceased by his parents, four brothers, five sisters, and daughter, Debbie Ramsey. He is survived by his wife Geneva; sons Rick Mensing (wife Janet), Kevin Mensing (wife Myra), and Jeff Mensing (wife Kim); grandchildren Chuck Ramsey, Eric Mensing (wife Diana), Jason Ramsey (wife Emily), Kyle Mensing (wife Erin), Beth Mensing, Eli Mensing, Kayla Mensing, Brooke Mensing, Grace Mensing, Wisdom Mensing, and Ellie Mensing; and great grandchildren Amber Mensing, and Peyton Mensing.
Visitation will be 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, TX. Services will be 2:00 PM on Monday, October 1, 2018 at Christ Lutheran Church, 300 E. Monroe, Austin, TX. Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery with full military honors.
