R.E. "Gene" Churchwell, age 83, of Quincy, died on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at 6:54 am in Blessing Hospital.
Gene was born on October 27, 1934 in Quincy, Illinois the son of Oscar Melvin and Dorothy Lousie Wittkopf Churchwell. On Ocotber 11, 1953, he married Lucille Ann Klote in St. Joseph Church in Edina, Missouri. She survives.
Gene was a 1952 graduate of Quincy High School. He served in the United States Naval Reserve during the Korean War, from 1952 until 1960. Gene was employed as a telecommunications engineer for Western Union for 31 years, until his retirement in 1984. He then was employed at National Semiconductor in Sunnyvale, California for 18 years. He was an active member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four children, Steven (Christine) Churchwell of McAlester, OK; Patricia (Stanley) Donald of Freeburg, IL; James (Lee Kindermann) Churchwell of Milford, MI; William (Margo) Churchwell of Chelsea, AL; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Churchwell-Phelps of North Sutton, NH; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Duane (Carol) Churchwell of Windsor, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by a son, Edward Churchwell, a granddaughter, Cosette Churchwell, a brother, Donald Churchwell, a sister Jacqueline (Richard) Kelley, and a sister-in-law, Helen Churchwell.
Services: 1:00 pm prayers on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home and 1:30 pm Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. Peter with Monsignor Leo Enlow officiating.
Burial: Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois
Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
