Robert "Bob" Jackson

Robert Lyle "Bob" Jackson, 88, of Quincy, died at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, October 22, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Home.

Bob was born January 11, 1929 in Detroit, MI.  He was the son of Lyle & Ann Boll Jackson.  He married Shirley Spilker on October 16, 1949 at a garden wedding at the home Shirley's parents.  She preceded him in death on November 10, 2007.

As a youth he delivered papers and collected money for the Quincy Herald Whig and worked during the summers on a relative's farm.  As an adult, he first worked at Moorman Mfg.  He then became a timekeeper at Gardner Denver where he worked for 44 years until his retirement in 1991.

Bob was a member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ where he had served on many committees, the church council, and as a youth advisor. At one time he was an active member of Salem Couples Club, Traveling Trompers Square Dance Club, Camper Stampers, and Herman Masonic Lodge #39 A F& AM.  He had been a Boy Scout Leader for many years.

He enjoyed helping others, woodworking, conversing with others, and working every Saturday at the Saturday Meals Program at Salem Church.  Many remember driving on State Street and seeing Bob sitting on his porch swing and waving to them as they passed by.  While at Good Samaritan Home, he enjoyed playing Bingo, and saving his winnings (candy) for his granddaughters' students.  He loved to joke with people, keeping the nurses and CNAs at Good Samaritan Home entertained.

Survivors include two daughters: Rev. Pam (Rev. Keith) Koebel of Saline, MI and Barbara (Mike) Edwards of Quincy, IL;  two sons, Mark (Toni) Jackson and Steve (fiancé, Rosie Logsdon) Jackson, both of Quincy, IL;  13 grandchildren: Christopher (Ashley Nederveld & daughter Rilyan) Koebel, Elizabeth (Josh) Beischer, Michelle (Derek) Svoboda, Emily (Pedro) Peraza, Kristi (Andrew) Drehmel, Katie (Mark Hoffman) Edwards, Cassie Edwards, Marcus Jackson, Paige (Alex Wiemelt) Jackson, Bentlea Jackson, and Gavin, Carter & Parker Logsdon; 2 great grandchildren,Calvin & Nora Drehmel, and Baby Boy Peraza due in April.

In addition to his wife Shirley, Bob was preceded in death by his parents; grandsons, David Matthew Edwards and Jeffrey Craig Koebel; a  granddaughter, Alexandra Marie Jackson; a brother, William (Frances) Jackson; two sisters, Louise (Dick) Gibson and Donna (Willy) Ellerbrock, and his beloved dog, Boots who loyally sat by Bob on the front porch.

Services:  10:00 am Friday, October 27, 2017 at Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ by the Rev. Pam Koebel and the Rev. Matthew Hunt.

Inurnment: Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois

Visitation:  4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home

"I will forever remember Bob fondly. I could always recognize his footsteps coming down the hallway toward my desk at Salem. He always had a funny comment to make and he always made me smile. His dog Boots used to smile too when Bob brought him in to get a treat from me."
