"Krista and family, I am so sorry to see that your Dad passed away. Believe me I know how hard this is for all of you. Please know that I am thinking of you and keeping you in my prayers. Sending a special hug to you Krista and your Mom."
Herbert A. "Herb" Kuchling, age 78, of Quincy, died Thursday, August 10, 2017, at 7:20 am in his home.
Herbert Koppe was born March 17, 1939 in Germany. He was placed in an orphanage after the death of his parents, and was adopted in the 1950's, and brought to Quincy, by Ernst and Augusta Recksiek Kuchling. On May 16, 1965, he married the love of his life, Lois Rhodes in St. Mary's Baptist Church in Plymouth, Illinois. She survives.
Herb was a graduate of Quincy High School. He trained as a diesel mechanic and upon finding that no job opportunities were available, he switched to automotive mechanics. He was turned down for a job by the Lincoln-Mercury dealer near his home, so he offered to work for a month with no pay, just to have a chance to prove himself. He succeeded and a month later was on the payroll. He went on to work for the Volkswagen dealer at 11th & Maine, working his way up to service manager. He was there for 13 years. Herb decided that he did not want to be a service manager for the rest of his career so he started Quincy Rustproofing. His business soon grew from rustproofing, to pin striping, vinyl roofs, to a full line automotive accessory store.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Lois, include a son, Jeff (Venus) Kuchling of Canton, MO; a daughter, Krista (Terry) Hochgraber of Fowler, IL; two granddaughters, Alexis and Audra; and three step-grandchildren, Destyni, Makay and Harmyni Combs of Hannibal, MO; a sister Ilse Kuss of Germany; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Landers and Pat (Gene) Whitford; two brothers-in-law, Jim (Betty) Rhodes and Chandis Stewart; numerous nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Bonnie Grist.
Herbert was preceded in death by parents, a brother, Fritz Koeppe, three sisters-in-law, Irene Owen, Evelyn Stewart, and Alice Jones, and four brothers-in-law, Clarence, Ray, Dean and Dale Rhodes.
