Harry Lee Hendricks, age 83, of Quincy, went home to his Savior on Sunday, August 28, 2016, at 12:05 pm in Blessing Hospital.
Harry was born November 3, 1932 in Quincy, Illinois, the son of William Arden and Norma Bowen Hendricks. He married Essie Totsch on May 22, 1992 in Hannibal, Missouri. She survives.
Harry graduated from Quincy High School before joining the United States Marine Corps. He served from 1952 to 1955 and spent two of those years deployed in Korea. He was wounded twice and received two Purple Heart medals for his service. Harry joined the United States Army National Guard unit in Quincy, where he served for 23 years. Harry was employed at Gardner Denver for 33 years, and then at the Illinois Veteran's Home in the power plant for 9 years, until his retirement.
Harry was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and had served as president for the State of Illinois for one year. He was a member of American Legion Post #37, where he had served as president. He was a member of the American Legion Honor Guard for over 40 years, where he honored veterans with the performance of military honors at the cemetery. Harry served for many years as commander of the American Legion Honor Guard.
Harry was a former member of the V.F.W. and the Elks. Harry was involved in the Herman Lodge #39 A.F. & A.M., Quincy Consistory, Ansar Shrine and the Belgian Hitch. He was a co-founder of the Shriner's Calliope Unit. Harry served as the Grand Marshal of the 2015 Veteran Day Parade
In addition to his wife, Harry is survived by his daughter, Cheri (Darren) Hays of Quincy; a step-son; two step-daughters; a brother, Bill (Sharon) Hendricks of Liberty, IL; a sister, Linda (Steve) Reckers of Moncks Corner, SC; and many nieces and nephews.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, and a half-brother, Kent Gallaher.
Services: 10:00 am Friday, September 2, 2016 at Central Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Andrew P. Martinez officiating and Military Services by the American Legion Post #37 and United States Marine Corps.
Burial: Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois
Visitation: 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Thursday September 1, 2016 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home
