In loving memory of

Evelyn M. Cherington
May 28, 2015

Evelyn M. Cherington, 92, of 624 Meadow Circle, more recently of St. Vincent's Home, peacefully passed away Thursday, May 28, 2015, surrounded by her family.

Evelyn was born in Baylis, Illinois to Thomas R. and Ethel E. Barnes Flynn and had one older brother, Gerald "Bud" Flynn. At the age of two, her family and she moved to Quincy, Illinois. She attended Emerson Elementary School and graduated from Quincy High School. While vacationing in California, during World War II, she met Louis M. Cherington, whom she later married on June 23, 1944. He preceded her in death on June 11, 1996.

She and Lou returned to Quincy, Illinois in 1955 and shortly thereafter, purchased a restaurant at the corner of 18th and Broadway that came to be known as "Cherington's". It proved to be a popular dining spot for Prairie Farms deliverymen, area residents, and visiting sports teams. She was an avid golfer and represented Cedar Crest Country Club in the Busch Cup Challenge for several years. Later in life she worked at an up-scale ladies clothing store called Leslie & Rickards and then managed TESS Fashions. Her sense of fashion and style was reflected in her retail career. She was the self-appointed baker who enjoyed creating all of the desserts for family events. Each dessert would have its own name that had a flurry of descriptive adjectives. While her children were in school, she was very involved with PTA. She also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. In retirement, she concentrated on family and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and several friends frequented "The Village Inn" on Tuesday mornings, where their group became known as "The Golden Girls".

She is survived by her son, Craig (Erin) Cherington of Quincy; her daughter, Deborah (Larry) Davis of Quincy; four grandchildren: Kevin (Kasey) Corbit of San Francisco, CA; Caitlyn Cherington of Quincy; Colleen (Chris) Salvatori of St. Peters, MO; and Crystal Davis of Quincy; four great-grandchildren: Alexis Smolko of Marietta, GA; Ronan and Belle Corbit of San Francisco, CA; and Lily Davis of Quincy; a nephew Denny (Marilyn) Flynn of Hannibal, MO; two nieces: Diane (Matt) Kendrick of Hannibal, MO; and Deneal (Mark) Sullivan of The Villages, FL; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two of her children, Stephen and Andrea; a great-grandchild, Paityn Rae Long; her parents; her brother, Gerald "Bud" Flynn; and a great-niece, Jessica Tucker.
