Howard Watts

Howard K. Watts, age 87, of 3920 S. 12th St., died Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 3:15 p.m. in his home.

He was born December 27, 1921 in Ellsberry, Missouri the son of William Thomas and Olive May Barber Watts. On September 11, 1942 he married Doris Evans in Goldsboro, North Carolina. She survives.

Howard served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Illinois and North Carolina before serving in England in 1943. In Goldsboro, NC, he was the youngest soldier to hold the grade of Master Sergeant. He was discharged in July of 1945. He went on to graduate from the University of Missouri with a degree in accounting.

After graduating, Howard went to work in Quincy for Central Fibre and later at Packaging Corporation of America as an accountant and later as office manager. In 1973, Howard partnered with Don Hagen and opened the Coach House restaurant. He went on to become the owner of Barons Restaurant on 36th and State. Howard retired at age 65 and sold the restaurant to John and Marie Baumgartner.

Howard loved meeting people and was especially proud of his grandchildren. He loved his family and had a special love for his great-grandchildren.

Survivors in addition to his wife include, a son, Howard Watts II and his wife Galina, of Albuquerque, NM; three grandchildren, Shelley Olson and her husband Mark, of Oak Ridge, NC, Jay Watts and Andrea Watts, both of Albuquerque; two great-grandchildren, McKenna and Brandon Olson, both of Oak Ridge; two sisters, Pauline Lock and Isa Mae Blackwell, both of Quincy; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Cyrus Watts, and a brother in infancy.

Services: Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with the Rev. Ivan Greuter officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Burial Park, Hannibal, Missouri.

Visitation: Friday, January 23, 2009 from 4 to 7 pm at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
