Arlo Orin Crossland, age 88, of 2100 Cherry Lane Estates South, Quincy, died Monday, July 14, 2014, at 10:00 pm in Good Samaritan Home.
Arlo was born April 7, 1926 in Bowen, Illinois, the son of Dr. Orin Harry and Mabel Golden Thompson Crossland. On February 12, 1947 he married Norma Eilene Raper in Bowen. She survives.
Arlo was a 1944 graduate of Bowen High School. He joined the United States Army while still in high school. Following graduation he began a pilot training program, but eventually moved to the Military Police as WWII was winding down. After returning from the service in 1946, Arlo started Crossland's Locker Service along with his father, Orin, and his brother, Maurice. Arlo continued to own and operate that business as Crossland's Meat Processing after Orin and Maurice passed away. The business closed in 1993 after 47 years.
Arlo was a life time member of Bowen United Methodist Church, and he had been a member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church since 2000. He was also a member of Good Samaritan Home Uncle Sams. In his spare time, Arlo enjoyed woodworking and photography.
In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons: Brent L. (Krista) Crossland of Petersburg, IL; and Lyle D. (Teresa) Crossland of Saint Louis, MO; five grandchildren; Jeremy Crossland of Jacksonville, FL; Matthew Crossland of Jacksonville; FL, Sean Crossland of Salt Lake City, UT; Taylor Crossland of St. Louis, MO; and Elliot Crossland of St. Louis, MO; a brother, Dr. Merle (Ann) Crossland of Quincy; three sisters: Edith Glosecki of Seattle, WA; Gladys (Carl) Koehser of Quincy; and Rosalie (James) Jacobs of Quincy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arlo was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Curtis Wayne Crossland; a brother, Maurice Crossland and his wife, Marjorie; and a brother-in-law, Andy Glosecki.
Services: 1:00 pm Friday, July 18, 2014 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with Rev. Patty Johansen and Chaplain James Riley officiating.
Burial: Bowen Cemetery
Visitation: Thursday, July 17, 2014 from 4-7 p.m. at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home
