Thomas E. Pickle

Thomas E. Pickle, 87, 1707 North 12th, Quincy, died Thursday, April 10, 2003 at 9:10 pm at the Illinois Veterans Home.

He was born October 2, 1915 in Moultrie County, Illinois, the son of Edward and Grace Hollonbeck Pickle. On June 1, 1943, he married Joye Wallace in St. Louis, MO. She preceded him in death on January 20, 1997.

He served as a Sgt. in the US Army in WWII and Korea, and he was one the few survivors when the SS Leopoldville was torpedoed December 24, 1944 in the English Channel. He was employed by Gardner Denver for over 30 years as a machinist until his retirement in 1978. After his retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling. He was a member a Grace United Methodist Church, Herman Lodge #39, A. F. & A. M., and the American Legion Post 37.

Survivors include his son, Gary Pickle and his wife Teresa, Quincy; 2 grandchildren, Michael Pickle and his wife Kim, Quincy; Paula Pickle, Springfield, IL ; 2 great grandchildren, Lenzie and McKenzie Pickle, Quincy; 2 step grandchildren, Stephan Iwanyckyj, Springfield, IL; Nicholas Iwanyckyj, Quincy; 4 step great grandchildren, Alex Burkett, Josh Humke, Gavyn Favre, and Joscelynn Favre, all of Quincy. He also was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, James Lehman and Ellsworth Lehman.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday , April 16, 2003 at 10:00 am in Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, Rev. Franklin Silas officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 pm in Arthur Cemetery, Arthur, Illinois. The family will receive friends from 4-6 pm Tuesday at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church or the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C.
