V. Sherman Bond, age 89, 2509 Country Club Drive North, Quincy, died Monday, June 18, 2001 at 5:30 am at the Good Samaritan Home.
He was born January 3, 1912 in Madison, Wisconsin, the son of Varley S. Bond and Ellen Koehler Bond.
On June 10, 1939 he married Pauline Ringo in Quincy, IL. She survives.
He received his B.S. degree in 1933 from the University of Wisconsin where he also received his Masters degree in 1935 in Bio-Chemistry. He came to Quincy in 1936 to set up a laboratory for Kalo Inoculant Co. At that time, he was also working on his PhD. at the University of Wisconsin. He remained in Quincy as Laboratory Director of Kalo Inoculant Co. He was then manager of the Farm Lab. division of Albert-Dickinson Co. in Chicago from 1956 to 1959. He came back to Quincy with Calcium Carbonate Co. in 1959 where he was Technical Director and Vice President of Industrial Sales until his retirement in 1978. He was a consultant for the company until 1982.
Mr. Bond was a member of the Quincy Unitarian Church and former chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was a member of Quincy Jaycees from 1937 to 1947; Member of Quincy Board of Education from 1945 to 1953 where he served as president in 1952 - 1953, former Member and president of Quincy Planning Commission, former Member of Adams County School Committee; former member of Blessing Hospital Education Committee; former member of Quincy Little Theater Board where he was President in 1946, former member and president of Quincy Youth commission, president of the Quincy Art Center 1987-1988, president of the Pulverized Limestone Association for two years, and a member of Quincy Country Club. .
He was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity at Wisconsin, and he belonged to the Mendota Yacht Club. He loved sailing and entered many races. He had worked during the summer for P.K. Wrigley on his boats at Lake Geneva. While in Quincy, he and his wife enjoyed chartering their boat and sailing the British Virgin Islands.
He is also survived by a daughter, Judith E. Bond, New York, NY, two sons, Rodney S. Bond and his wife Cheryl, Austin, TX, and Peter R. Bond and his wife Joan, Philadelphia, PA, 6 grandchildren, Laura Williams and her husband James, Austin, TX, Aaron Bond, Austin, TX, Ian and Miles Bond, Philadelphia, PA, Stephanie Smith, New York, NY, and Robyn Smith, Berkeley, CA., a sister, Eleanor Sampson, Geneva, IL, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jane D. Bond and a brother, Walter E. Bond.
Memorial services will be held Thursday morning at 10 am in the Unitarian Church conducted by Dr. Robert Manning. Private inurnment will be in Woodland Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 until 7 pm at the Hansen-Spear Funeral. Memorials may be given to the Unitarian Church or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
