Gary F. Butler

Gary F. Butler, age 66, of 92 North County Rd 840, Mendon, IL died Thursday, June 16, 2011, at 8:10 pm in Blessing Hospital.

Gary was born July 30, 1944 in Boston, MA, the son of Frank J. and Virginia I. Frazier Butler.  He married Savina "Cookie" Orozco on March 28, 1964 in Ft. Madison, Iowa.  She survives.

He worked at Quincy Country Club as assistant greens keeper, and for Scotty Glasgow at Westview Golf Course as head greens keeper.  In 1978 Gary was hired as Ranger and Summer Camp Director at Camp Saukenauk with the Boy Scouts.  He retired in 2001 and devoted himself to his artwork.  He was a well known artist and Quincy's premier portrait artist.    Gary's artwork was donated for 10 years for the Boy Scouts Distinguished Citizens Award Banquet.  He was director of the mural project with children for the Park District and was privately commissioned as a portrait artist.  Gary donated his art and his time to any cause he thought was worthwhile.  His major hobby was restoring his 1905 farm house.

In addition to his wife; his four daughters, Susan (Stephen) Walters of Tappahannock, VA,  Trudi Butler and Rebecca Butler, both of Mendon, IL, and Hannah (John Plisevich) Hull of Saint Louis, MO; 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth Savina Walters, Elaine Walters, Josphine Bach, Alexis Haistings, and Zachary Haistings: five siblings, Rodger (Janice) Butler, Monte (Martha) Butler, and Kirk (Kathy) Butler, Vicki (Dale Pezley) Slater all of Ft. Madison, Iowa, and Scott (Dawn) Butler of Farmington, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 6:30 pm Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with Lonnie Dunn officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm, Tuesday at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home

Memorials: Blessing Cancer Center and Saukenauk Preservation Society, QSFA Instant Arts Dollars for Youth Art Programs
