Joseph J. Tegeler

Joseph J. "Joe" Tegeler, age 93, of Curtis Creek Retirement Center, and formerly of 1425 South 27th, died July 22, 2011, at 10:00 pm in St. Vincent's Home.

Joe was born April 21, 1918 in Dyersville, Iowa, the son of Gerhard J. and Alma R. Hemming Tegeler.  He married Dorothy Hermann on August 7, 1946 in Quincy, IL.  She preceded him in death on November 17, 1971.   He married Audrey Steinway on December 1, 1972 in Quincy.  She preceded him in death on November 30, 2009.

Joe served in the U.S. Navy from 1937-1957 retirng as a Chief Hospital Corpsman.  He received four Naval commendations. He came to Quincy in 1958 and was a funeral director at Duker Brothers Funeral Home until 1979.  At that time he joined the staff of Hansen-Spear Funeral Directors where he was employed until his retirement in 1998.

Joe was a member of the Church of St. Peter from the time he moved to Quincy in 1958 to the present.  He was a life time member of the Fleet Reserve Association since 1948.  He was a member of American Legion Post #37 and was an active member of the Mart Heinen Club at QU where he was a long time ticket taker for Hawk basketball and soccer games.  Joe was a volunteer at both St. Mary Hospital and Blessing Hospital.

Survivors include: three children Joyce (John) Schullian of Vernon Hills, IL, Donna (Steven) Schoch  of Quincy, IL, and Col. Thomas (Leslie USAFR -retired) Tegeler, USAF (retired) of Chandler, AZ; six grandchildren, Jay (Julie) Schullian of Cary, IL, Commander Katie Schullian, USN of Arlington, VA, Michael Schoch of Quincy, IL, Kathleen Schoch of Normal, IL, 2nd Lt. Matthew (Sarah) Tegeler, USAF of Laughlin AFB, TX,  Melissa Tegeler of Nashville, TN, three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Cole and Bennett  Schullian of Cary, IL; two sisters, Mildred Tegeler Conzett of Dubuque, Iowa, and Ethel Tegeler McCreedy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two brothers, Ralph Tegeler of Lacrosse, WI, and Leo Tegeler of Dubuque, Iowa.

Joe was also preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters, Marie  Tegeler, Clara Tegeler Wall, and Catherine Tegeler.

Services: 8:30 am Prayers at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home followed by a mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am Saturday, July 30, 2011 in the  Church of St. Peter, with Monsignor Leo Enlow officiating.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery with full military rites by American Legion Post #37 and Illinois Military Funeral Honors.

Visitation: 4-7 pm Friday July 29, 2011 with a Rosary Service at 6:45 pm -  at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home

Memorials: the Church of St. Peter, Blessing Foundation for Hospice or St. Vincent's Home
