"William, I am so very sorry for your loss. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. ~ Roberta Engstrom Durand"
Ward LeRoy Steven was born July 27, 1958, in Kansas City, Missouri, and was lovingly raised by his grandmother, Dottie Arlene Brown. After spending his early years in Missouri, he and his family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he graduated from the Des Moines Public School System. Following graduation, he desired to serve his country and enlisted in the United States
Army. He spent over 12 years in service to his country; which included being stationed in Germany. During that time, he enjoyed learning about various cultures, traditions, and enjoyed
significant travel.
While he enjoyed his time in Germany, he decided to return to the United States and settled in Florida where he held several jobs prior to moving back to the Des Moines area in the early
90's. While living in the Des Moines area, Ward worked at Prairie Meadows.
In 2000, Ward moved to the Pocahontas area to help his friend, William Steven. Ward and William later married on January 21, 2015, in Pocahontas. While living in Pocahontas, Ward
enjoyed working at Upper Des Moines Opportunities and serving the local community. He loved spending time with his friends, family and helping care for his beloved grandchildren, Zoey and Zack.
Ward enjoyed life and had a passion for cooking, grilling and canning. He spent a significant amount of time outdoors gardening, mowing and caring for their flowers. Often, he could be found tinkering with things, taking them apart, and challenging himself to put them back together. He especially enjoyed playing with their dogs, Butch and Rowdy. Ward often loved finding things in his favorite color, purple.
Ward passed away Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa, at the age of 60.
Ward is survived by his husband, William Steven of Pocahontas, daughter Cassandra (Andrew) Jansen of Rolfe, IA; granddaughter, Zoey Rheuport and grandson, Zack Rheuport;
sister, Gaby Thiessen of Weir, Kansas; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
